About the Innovating Education in Africa 2025 Program

Launched in 2018, the Innovating Education in Africa (IEA) program by the African Union (AU) was created to address persistent barriers in African education—particularly related to access, quality, equity, and relevance.

Despite significant gains, the AU continues to prioritize interventions that bridge education gaps:

  • 20% of African children aged 6–11 are out of school
  • 33% of adolescents aged 12–14 are excluded
  • 60% of youth aged 15–17 are not in education
  • Girls remain disproportionately affected

Since inception, IEA has supported over 180 innovations, mobilized more than 1,500 stakeholders, and disbursed over USD 1 million in technical and financial support.

What’s New in 2025?

This year, the African Union Innovating Education in Africa 2025 program will:

  • Award USD 50,000 each to three winning innovations
  • Offer selected applicants a chance to be published in the Africa Education Innovations Handbook 2025
  • Recognize winners with an official AU Commissioner certificate
  • Facilitate exposure to AU Member States, ministries of education, and development partners

Expert tip from GrantsDatabase.org: “Success isn’t just about having a brilliant idea—it’s about having proof of impact, a scalability model, and a clear plan for integration into public systems. Highlight partnerships with schools, government agencies, or ministries to boost credibility.”
