NBR Chinese Language Fellowship Program 2026–2027

    Deadline: February 16, 2026

The NBR Chinese Language Fellowship Program 2026–2027 is a highly competitive, fully funded fellowship designed to support advanced Chinese language training for U.S. graduate students. Administered by the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the programme aims to strengthen future expertise on China in academia, policy, and public service.

The NBR Chinese Language Fellowship Program 2026–2027 enables selected fellows to spend one full academic year undertaking intensive Chinese language study in China or Taiwan, building the linguistic capacity necessary for advanced research, teaching, and policy engagement.

    Overview of the Fellowship

The fellowship supports graduate-level students who already possess intermediate Chinese language skills and are committed to deepening their proficiency through immersive, full-time study. The programme prioritises applicants whose long-term academic or professional goals contribute to improving understanding of China within the United States.

This fellowship is strictly for language training and is not intended to fund standalone dissertation research.

    Fellowship Tracks and Funding

The programme offers two distinct fellowship tracks, each with tailored funding levels and eligibility requirements.

    PhD Track

The PhD Track is designed for students who are currently enrolled in a doctoral programme.

    Key features include:

    • Approximately nine months of intensive Chinese language study, with the possibility of an additional summer component
    • Opportunity for one-on-one instruction and guided reading of primary source materials related to the fellow’s academic research
    • Funding of up to USD 50,000, which typically covers tuition, living expenses, and related programme costs

    Prospective PhD Track

The Prospective PhD Track is intended for students who are preparing to pursue doctoral study.

    Key features include:

    • Open to current master’s students or recent graduates planning to enrol in a PhD programme
    • Approximately nine months of full-time intensive Chinese language study
    • Funding of up to USD 40,000 to support tuition and living expenses

    Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements to be considered:

    • Demonstrate intermediate-level Chinese language proficiency (this programme is not suitable for beginners)
    • Commit to full-time, intensive Chinese language study for one academic year
    • Show a clear interest in China-related academic research, teaching, or public policy work
    • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States

Applicants should clearly articulate how advanced Chinese language training aligns with their academic or professional trajectory.

    Application Requirements

A complete application typically includes the following materials:

    • A completed online application form detailing academic background and Chinese language experience
    • A two-page summary résumé highlighting academic and professional achievements (a full CV is not required)
    • A two-page cover letter explaining how the fellowship and language training support the applicant’s future goals
    • Two letters of recommendation, including:
      • One from an academic supervisor or professor
      • One from a recent Chinese language instructor
    • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (submitted as PDF files)

Applicants whose transcripts do not clearly reflect their language level or doctoral plans should address this in their cover letter and ensure referees provide supporting context.

    Host Institutions and Study Locations

Fellows typically enrol in recognised intensive Chinese language programmes in China or Taiwan. Common host institutions include:

    • International Chinese Language Program (ICLP), National Taiwan University
    • Inter-University Program (IUP) for Chinese Language Studies, Tsinghua University, Beijing

Applicants may also propose alternative high-quality language programmes, subject to approval.

    Fellowship Timeline

    • Application Deadline: 16 February 2026
    • Selection Review: Late winter 2026
    • Notification of Results: Around April 2026
    • Programme Start: Academic year 2026–2027

    Who Should Apply?

This fellowship is ideal for graduate students who:

    • Already possess intermediate Chinese language skills
    • Plan to pursue advanced China-focused research or policy work
    • Seek immersive training to strengthen reading, speaking, and analytical language capabilities
