Deadline: March 5, 2026

The Call for Funding Proposals: Economics of Climate Change Adaptation in Africa invites eligible African research organisations to submit proposals for innovative, policy-relevant research on the economics of climate change adaptation. This funding opportunity forms part of the Raising Adaptation Impact and Ambition (RAIA) project under the UK Aid-funded Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) Research Programme, delivered by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in collaboration with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

The aim of this call is to generate robust economic evidence that strengthens the integration of adaptation into public policy, planning, and budgeting across Africa.

About the Call

The RAIA project focuses on advancing the economics of climate change adaptation by supporting locally led research that informs decision-making and financial planning. This initiative seeks to fill critical evidence gaps and empower African institutions to produce economic analyses that directly influence national adaptation strategies.

Through this call, selected projects will help strengthen both research capacity and the policy linkages required to scale up adaptation investment. The funding aims to bridge the gap between research, policy, and finance, ensuring adaptation responses are informed by credible economic evidence.

Funding Information

  • Funding per project: USD 80,000 – 120,000
  • Number of grants available: Approximately 10 – 12
  • Project duration: Up to 11 months
  • Funding purpose: To produce actionable economic insights and evidence to inform climate adaptation planning, finance, and investment across Africa.

The Call for Funding Proposals: Economics of Climate Change Adaptation in Africa provides opportunities for innovative studies that quantify the costs and benefits of adaptation, explore effective financing mechanisms, and assess the wider economic implications of climate resilience strategies.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants include:

  • Universities and academic institutions
  • Policy and economic research institutes
  • Think tanks and independent research entities
  • Legally registered organisations with relevant experience in economics and climate research

While government ministries cannot directly apply as lead institutions, partnerships with national or sub-national ministries — particularly ministries of finance, planning, or environment — are strongly encouraged. Such collaborations will help ensure that research findings are directly relevant and applicable to public policy contexts.

Thematic Focus Areas

Applicants are encouraged to submit research proposals within the following thematic areas:

  • Economic valuation of climate impacts and adaptation responses
  • Identification and evaluation of economic, financial, and market instruments that can enhance adaptation investment
  • Strengthening mechanisms for tracking, allocating, and reporting adaptation finance

All proposals must consider distributional impacts, gender equality, and social inclusion, ensuring that adaptation strategies benefit vulnerable and marginalised groups.

Project Goals and Expected Outcomes

Funded projects should aim to:

  • Generate credible, context-specific economic evidence to support climate adaptation decisions;
  • Strengthen national research and analytical capacity;
  • Enhance dialogue between research institutions and policy or finance authorities;
  • Contribute to national adaptation and investment frameworks.

The research outputs are expected to inform both public and private sector stakeholders, contributing to more sustainable and equitable adaptation outcomes across Africa.

Timeline

  • Call opening date: 12 February 2026
  • Application deadline: 5 March 2026 (23:59 EAT)
  • Evaluation and notification of results: March 2026
  • Contract signing and orientation: From April 2026

Applicants are encouraged to prepare strong, evidence-based proposals that align with the outlined themes and objectives. Proposals must clearly demonstrate how the research will influence adaptation policy, investment, or decision-making at the national or regional level.

Application and Further Information

Eligible institutions interested in applying should prepare proposals following the official guidelines and submission requirements outlined by SEI under the RAIA project.
