Deadline: March 20, 2026

The MILEAD Fellows Program 2026 is now open for applications. This prestigious leadership development initiative aims to identify, nurture, and empower young African women with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to creating positive change for women and girls across the continent.

Organised by the Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (MILEAD), the fellowship offers a unique platform for young women to strengthen their leadership skills, expand their networks, and implement transformative community projects that address critical issues affecting women and girls in Africa.

About the MILEAD Fellows Program 2026

The MILEAD Fellows Program 2026 (Moremi Initiative Leadership Empowerment and Development) is a transformative leadership training and mentorship experience designed to develop the next generation of African women leaders.

Each year, 25 outstanding young women are selected to participate in an intensive year-long fellowship that combines a three-week residential leadership institute in Ghana with a one-year community leadership project in their home countries.

The fellowship provides participants with advanced leadership training, networking opportunities, and mentoring from accomplished African and global leaders. Fellows also gain practical experience through community change projects, equipping them to lead effectively and make lasting impact in their respective sectors.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the MILEAD Fellows Program 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be female citizens of an African country (residing in Africa or the Diaspora).
  • Be between 19 and 25 years old by the time of application.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership potential, commitment to public or community service, and a proven passion for advancing women’s rights and development.
  • Be willing to participate fully in all programme components.

Applicants may be students, emerging professionals, or social innovators. The fellowship is not a full-time engagement, allowing fellows to continue with their academic or professional responsibilities except during the residential institute.

Programme Structure and Components

The fellowship runs over a one-year period, beginning with a residential training and continuing through mentoring, project implementation, and networking.

1. Residential Leadership Institute (Ghana)

  • Skills training in advocacy, project management, and communication.
  • Networking with established African women leaders, policymakers, and mentors.

2. Community Change Project

Each fellow designs and executes a Community Leadership Project (CLP) focused on addressing an issue that impacts women or girls in her community. The project serves as a practical platform for applying the leadership principles gained during the training.

3. Mentoring and Peer Support

Fellows receive ongoing mentorship from established leaders and professionals throughout the year, as well as peer support from the MILEAD network — a vibrant community of young African women leaders from diverse fields.
