About the Challenge
The NATO STO Women and Girls in Science Challenge 2026 calls for visionary research proposals centred around real-world scientific challenges framed through imaginative future scenarios such as “A Day Without Internet” or “A Day Without Space.” These hypothetical yet realistic situations encourage participants to explore the resilience of modern societies and propose innovative, science-based solutions to enhance security and sustainability.
The challenge aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among young women and girls who are passionate about using science and technology to shape a safer, more resilient world.
Who Can Apply
The competition is open to:
- Women and girls aged 18–35
- University students (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level) and early-career researchers in STEM or related social sciences
- Applicants who are nationals of NATO member countries
- Individuals affiliated with a university or recognised research institution
Proposals must be written and submitted in English.
Key Dates
- Application Deadline: 11 March 2026 (23:59 CET)
- Final Presentations: Around 9 June 2026 at NATO Headquarters, Brussels

Submission Guidelines
Participants are required to develop a proposal aligned with one of the official NATO STO challenge scenarios. Submissions should include:
- The title of the proposal
- Background and context of the research idea
- Relevance to defence and security challenges
- Scientific objectives and topics covered
- The potential societal impact and avenues for future exploitation
The proposal should reflect original thinking and demonstrate how the proposed solution contributes to real-world resilience in science and technology.
