The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme – MENA 2026 is a prestigious research mobility opportunity for postdoctoral researchers based in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The programme offers scientists the chance to undertake a three-month fully funded research visit to Germany, aimed at building long-term research collaborations with leading German institutions.

Overview of the TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme – MENA 2026

Organised by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation), the TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme – MENA 2026 supports early-career researchers in strengthening their scientific expertise and fostering international research networks. The initiative serves as a platform for MENA scientists to explore collaborative research possibilities that can lead to future joint projects under TWAS and DFG programmes.

    Application Timeline

    • Application Deadline: 15 April 2026
    • Visit Period: Must take place within 12 months of the award (typically between 2027 and 2028)

    Who Can Apply

The programme is open to postdoctoral researchers from MENA countries who meet the following eligibility criteria:

    • Must hold a PhD obtained not earlier than 2021 (with extended flexibility for women scientists due to childcare responsibilities).
    • Must hold a research position at an institution in a MENA country at the time of application.
    • Must have at least five years of active engagement in scientific research, teaching, or training within a MENA or sub-Saharan African institution.
    • Applicants currently residing in Germany are not eligible.
    • Applicants should not have an existing strong collaboration with their intended German host (for example, no co-authored publication).
    • Women scientists are strongly encouraged to apply.

    • Strengthening the scientific capacity of participating institutions.

This programme provides an excellent pathway for young scientists to enhance their research impact and visibility at an international level.

    Benefits

Selected participants will receive full financial support, which includes:

    • Travel expenses to and from Germany, covered by the DFG.
    • Subsistence and living costs for the entire duration of the three-month stay.
    • Access to cutting-edge research facilities and collaboration with experienced German researchers.
    • Networking opportunities that may lead to future international partnerships or joint research projects.

    Required Application Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents during the online application process:

    1. A scanned copy of their passport.
    2. An invitation letter from a German host institution outlining the planned research activities.
    3. Two reference letters from academic or professional referees.
    4. A copy of the PhD certificate.
    5. Proof of language proficiency (English or German).
    6. A supporting statement from the applicant’s home institution confirming leave for the duration of the visit.

    Why Apply?

This unique opportunity is ideal for researchers seeking to:

    • Build and strengthen collaborations with international peers.
    • Gain exposure to new research environments.
    • Expand their academic and professional networks.
