The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program 2026–2027 is a prestigious, year-long academic fellowship offered by Columbia University’s Global Centers. The programme is designed to support early-career scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who have experienced forced displacement or hold refugee status.

The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program 2026–2027 provides scholars with the opportunity to advance their research, strengthen academic networks, and receive mentorship from Columbia faculty—while remaining based in their region of residence.


About the Fellowship

The fellowship supports emerging scholars whose academic trajectories have been disrupted by displacement. It combines research funding, mentorship, professional development, and access to Columbia’s global academic resources.

Unlike traditional fellowships that require relocation to the United States or Europe, this programme is regionally based, allowing fellows to continue their work within their local context while engaging with a global academic community.


Host Locations

Successful fellows will be hosted at one of the following Columbia Global Centers:

  • Amman – Middle East & North Africa
  • Nairobi – Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Santiago – Latin America & the Caribbean

Applicants must be based in the same region as their selected host centre.


Fellowship Benefits

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have experienced forced displacement or hold refugee status
  • Work within the humanities or humanistic social sciences
  • Hold a PhD (exceptions may be considered for scholars whose doctoral studies were disrupted)
  • Be an early-career scholar, with the highest degree earned within the past 12 years (flexibility may apply)
  • Be based in the region of the selected host centre
  • Possess at least intermediate proficiency in English
  • Be available to spend a minimum of six months in person at the host centre, where feasible

Creative writers, artists, curators, and scholars working across disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.


Programme Duration and Expectations

  • Duration: One year
  • Format: Regionally based, non-residential
  • Fellows are expected to actively participate in:
    • Academic presentations
    • Workshops and training sessions
    • Centre-led events and programming
