About the UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship 2026

The UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship 2026 is a one-week, fully supported programme designed to bridge the gender gap in AI policy and strengthen the participation of women in international technology and security dialogues. It offers participants the opportunity to gain technical and policy insights into the governance of AI and its implications for global peace and security.

This fellowship provides a platform for women leaders to explore the intersection of AI, diplomacy, and disarmament while enhancing their professional networks and technical understanding of emerging technologies.

Objectives of the Fellowship

The programme seeks to:

  • Address existing gender disparities in AI governance and policy discussions.
  • Strengthen technical understanding and policy expertise among women in international peace and security.
  • Build confidence, competence, and leadership capacity in AI-related multilateral discussions.
  • Connect fellows with global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders shaping the future of AI governance.

Programme Components

The fellowship combines three core pillars of learning, exposure, and collaboration:

1. Education

Participants will receive in-depth training on the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, including its capabilities, limitations, and applications within security and governance contexts. The educational component also covers the role of AI in disarmament and international policy frameworks.

2. Exploration

Fellows will engage directly with experts from the academic, technical, and policy communities. These interactions will provide valuable insights into the evolving AI ecosystem, its real-world applications, and regulatory challenges.

3. Networking

Networking opportunities form a vital part of the fellowship. Participants will interact with a diverse range of professionals, including diplomats, civil society representatives, and private-sector experts. Activities include a high-level reception in Geneva and virtual engagement sessions with leading AI and policy specialists.

Upon completion, fellows become part of the UNIDIR Expert Network on the Governance of AI in the Military Domain, ensuring continued learning and collaboration beyond the programme.

The UNIDIR Women in AI Fellowship 2026 is fully funded. There are no participation fees, and travel and accommodation support are provided for selected fellows. Priority is given to candidates from developing countries, ensuring equitable access and representation.
