About the UNHR Summer Fellowship Program 2026
The University Network for Human Rights (UNHR) offers a unique summer fellowship that enables participants to work closely with seasoned human rights attorneys and advocates. Location and Duration
The UNHR Summer Fellowship Program 2026 will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, offering fellows a vibrant international learning environment. The fellowship runs for approximately 8–10 weeks during Summer 2026, providing ample time to immerse in projects, collaborate with experts, and experience intercultural exchange.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to:
- Law students
- Graduate students
- Exceptional undergraduate students with a strong academic record and demonstrated commitment to human rights or social justice
Applicants should possess excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work independently and in teams.
Fellowship Responsibilities
Selected fellows will have the opportunity to work on diverse human rights initiatives under the mentorship of professionals in the field. Responsibilities include:
- Legal Research and Writing: Drafting legal memos, briefs, and submissions to human rights bodies.
- Research and Advocacy Support: Conducting desk research, preparing country briefs, and developing thematic reports.
- Program Coordination: Assisting with planning, organizing, and coordinating human rights projects and events.
- Communications and Outreach: Supporting report preparation, social media engagement, and content creation for blogs and publications.
Through these roles, fellows will gain practical insights into human rights advocacy, enhance their professional experience, and build a valuable global network.
Funding and Financial Support
The UNHR Summer Fellowship Program 2026 is not fully funded. Participants are expected to cover their travel, accommodation, and other living expenses during the fellowship period.
However, in exceptional cases, the UNHR may offer partial financial support to candidates with proven financial need or unique skills that align with the fellowship’s objectives. Applicants are also encouraged to explore academic grants or external funding options from their home institutions.
