The MECAM Fellowship 2026-2027 offers an exceptional opportunity for postdoctoral and advanced researchers in the humanities and social sciences to undertake an intensive, fully funded residential research fellowship in Tunis, Tunisia.

Hosted by the Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM), this fellowship brings together scholars from across the world to engage in interdisciplinary research, intellectual exchange, and collaborative academic activities focused on critical global and regional challenges.

Fellowship Theme

All proposed research projects must align with MECAM’s overarching theme:

Imagining Futures: Dealing with Disparity

Applicants are required to situate their research within at least one of MECAM’s five Interdisciplinary Research Fields (IRFs):

  1. Aesthetics and Cultural Practice
  2. Inequality and Mobility
  3. Memory and Justice
  4. Resources and Sustainability
  5. Identities and Beliefs

Interdisciplinary and transregional perspectives are strongly encouraged.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a PhD degree (postdoctoral researchers or advanced researchers only)
  • Be working within the humanities or social sciences
  • Demonstrate strong interest in interdisciplinary and transregional research
  • Be able to engage academically in English and/or French
  • Be available for full-time residential participation in Tunis

Not Eligible:

  • Doctoral candidates or PhD students who have not yet completed their doctorate

Applicants from all countries, academic backgrounds, and genders are welcome, including independent scholars.
