The Democracy Fellowship in Sudan 2025 – Third Cohort is now open for applications, offering a transformative nine-month programme designed to strengthen the research, writing, and policy engagement capacities of young Sudanese leaders. This initiative supports emerging voices committed to promoting democracy, peace, and evidence-based reforms across Sudan.
About the Fellowship
The Democracy Fellowship is a comprehensive research and capacity-building programme aimed at young Sudanese active in public life. It enables participants to gain advanced skills in evidence-based research, public-policy writing, and analytical engagement. The programme is structured to help fellows contribute meaningfully to national and international conversations on democracy, governance, and peacebuilding.
Programme Structure
The fellowship runs for nine months and consists of two core phases:
1. Training Phase
Participants undergo high-level training in:
- Research methodologies
- Public-policy analysis
- Policy writing techniques
- Analytical communication
During this phase, fellows receive personalised feedback, attend specialised workshops, and build the essential competencies required to draft rigorous research and policy papers.
2. Research Phase
Following the training period, a selected group of top-performing participants progresses to the research phase. These individuals will:
- Conduct in-depth policy or scientific research
- Develop evidence-based publications
- Produce high-quality outputs intended to contribute to Sudan’s public discourse
- Receive professional guidance to refine their research for publication or public engagement
Grant Support
Fellows who advance to the research stage may apply for small grants of up to USD 1,600. These funds are intended to support:
- Research implementation
- Data collection
- Fieldwork
- Dissemination of findings
- Policy outreach activities
This financial support empowers young researchers to translate their ideas into credible, impactful work that can influence policymaking and advocacy.
