About the ICMAB Journalist in Residence 2026 Program

The ICMAB Journalist in Residence 2026 invites professional journalists to join the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) for a 4 to 8-week residency. During this period, participants will gain exclusive access to the institute’s research activities and work closely with scientists and technical staff.

Journalists will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet and interview researchers to understand their work and ongoing projects.
  • Explore ICMAB’s labs and projects, witnessing cutting-edge scientific discoveries firsthand.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and internal activities, fully integrating into the daily life of the institute.
  • Produce at least one journalistic piece, which can include articles, podcasts, videos, or other media inspired by their residency experience.

The residency period is planned for April–June 2026, hosted under ICMAB’s “Severo Ochoa” Centre of Excellence initiative.

Eligibility and Requirements

The ICMAB Journalist in Residence 2026 program seeks applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Professional Journalists: Applicants must have a proven track record in journalism, either freelance or media-affiliated.
  • Local or Able to Relocate: Candidates should be based in or around Barcelona/Catalonia, or able to reside there for the duration of the program.
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in Catalan, Spanish, and English (both written and spoken) is required.
  • Interest in Science Communication: Applicants must demonstrate an ability or interest in engaging with scientific research and translating it for public audiences.
  • Application Materials: Submission must include CV, three samples of previous work (articles, audio/video, etc.), a 1–2 page project proposal, a statement of language skills, and proof of affiliation or portfolio.
