    New York Times A.I. Initiatives Fellowship 2026

This paid fellowship offers early-career professionals the opportunity to explore and apply artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning tools in the newsroom of one of the world’s most influential media organisations.


    About the New York Times A.I. Initiatives Fellowship 2026

    The New York Times A.I. Initiatives Fellowship 2026 invites exceptional candidates to join the A.I. Initiatives team in applying emerging technologies to real-world journalistic problems. Fellows will work closely with editors, engineers, and product designers to create tools that enhance reporting and storytelling through A.I.

    Fellows will help investigate, design, and execute newsroom projects that use machine learning and data science in areas such as:

    • Transcription and translation
    • Document search and analysis
    • Natural language processing
    • Computer vision and multimedia tools

    This is an in-office position requiring four days of work per week at The New York Times headquarters, with some flexibility for remote work.


    Benefits

    • Annual Base Pay: USD 82,414.80

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Have no more than five years of full-time professional experience in journalism and/or machine learning.
    • Demonstrate strong technical skills in:
      • Data analysis and application development
      • Machine learning model development
      • Front-end web applications
      • APIs and databases
    • Possess editorial experience, such as work with a college newspaper or professional newsroom internship.
    • Show interest in the intersection of journalism and A.I., especially regarding the ethical implications of A.I. in reporting.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Candidates with the following additional experience will be given priority:

    • Applying A.I. or machine learning to real-world problems
    • Working with large datasets and cloud computing platforms
    • Developing with front-end frameworks, such as Svelte
    • A demonstrated commitment to innovation and responsible technology use in journalism

    Work Conditions

    • Schedule: Primarily in-office, four days per week
    • Additional Hours: Some evenings, weekends, or holidays may be required
