The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto 2026-2027 offers full sponsorship for eligible graduate students from Sub-Saharan Africa to study at the University of Toronto.

Through a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the University of Toronto’s Africa Initiative, the program supports students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, leadership potential, and a deep commitment to giving back to their communities.

Scholars receive full financial assistance and are equipped with mentorship, leadership training, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.


Eligible Graduate Programs

Applicants must apply for one of the following graduate programs at the University of Toronto:

  • Master of Engineering (Biomedical)
  • Master of Financial Insurance
  • MHSc Master of Health Administration
  • MHSc Master of Health Informatics
  • MPH: Health Promotion
  • MPH: Occupational and Environmental Health

These programs align with the Mastercard Foundation’s focus on health, technology, and inclusive economic development across Africa.


Scholarship Coverage

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto offers full financial support throughout the period of study. Coverage includes:

  • Basic living expenses

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto 2026-2027, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen and resident of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Have graduated from (or be about to graduate from) a partner institution within the Africa Health Collaborative network.
  • Not yet have begun any graduate studies.
  • Be under the age of 35 at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills, and a commitment to community development.
  • Be admissible to one of the listed graduate programs at the University of Toronto.
  • Show a strong commitment to returning home after completing studies to contribute to health, social, or economic development in their country.

Application Process

Application Deadline: November 3, 2025 (12:00 noon, Toronto time)

Applicants are required to complete and submit the online application form before the deadline. In addition, all academic transcripts from partner institutions must be emailed to the designated address as outlined in the application guidelines.

  • Statement of purpose (showing leadership and commitment to Africa’s development)
  • CV/Resume
