About the Fellowship
The Policy Innovation Lab Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science and Policy Innovation 2026–2027 is hosted by Stellenbosch University’s School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. Fellows will work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment to conduct innovative research, shape responsible AI policies, and collaborate with policymakers and practitioners to solve real-world challenges.

Fellowship Objectives
The fellowship is focused on harnessing Responsible AI to improve policy-making. Fellows will engage in research and practical policy innovation activities that involve both:
- Applying AI and data science tools to enhance policy processes
- Contributing to the development of policies that promote responsible and ethical use of AI
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a PhD in engineering, data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics, or a related field.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in using technology for societal impact.
- Possess strong programming skills and quantitative research abilities.
- Be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
- Be willing to relocate to Stellenbosch and work on campus during regular working hours.
Roles and Responsibilities
Successful fellows will be expected to contribute to the Policy Innovation Lab through a mix of research, engagement, and capacity-building activities, including:
