The Policy Innovation Lab Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science and Policy Innovation 2026–2027 at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, offers an exceptional opportunity for emerging researchers to work at the intersection of technology and policy.

    This fully funded two-year fellowship is designed to equip postdoctoral researchers with the skills, environment, and resources to explore responsible AI applications that can drive meaningful policy change.


    About the Fellowship

    The Policy Innovation Lab Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science and Policy Innovation 2026–2027 is hosted by Stellenbosch University’s School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. Fellows will work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment to conduct innovative research, shape responsible AI policies, and collaborate with policymakers and practitioners to solve real-world challenges.

    • Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa
    • Fellowship Duration: 2 years
    • Annual Stipend: R420,000 (tax-free)

    Fellowship Objectives

    The fellowship is focused on harnessing Responsible AI to improve policy-making. Fellows will engage in research and practical policy innovation activities that involve both:

    • Applying AI and data science tools to enhance policy processes
    • Contributing to the development of policies that promote responsible and ethical use of AI

    Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a PhD in engineering, data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics, or a related field.
    • Demonstrate a strong interest in using technology for societal impact.
    • Possess strong programming skills and quantitative research abilities.
    • Be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
    • Be willing to relocate to Stellenbosch and work on campus during regular working hours.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    Successful fellows will be expected to contribute to the Policy Innovation Lab through a mix of research, engagement, and capacity-building activities, including:

    • Conducting high-quality, peer-reviewed research aligned with the Lab’s mission.
    • Using data science and responsible AI tools to address real policy challenges.
    • Supporting training and capacity-building programmes.
    • Collaborating with experts, policymakers, funders, and civil society actors across sectors.
