This prestigious programme, organised by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in partnership with leading global and African institutions, provides a unique platform for early to mid-career professionals to explore the vital intersection of science, diplomacy, and policy.

About the HSRC Science Diplomacy Summer School 2025

The HSRC Science Diplomacy Summer School 2025 equips participants with practical knowledge, skills, and networks needed to interface science, policy, and diplomacy. Through interactive learning and peer exchange, participants will engage with experts on global cooperation, innovation, and evidence-informed policymaking.

The programme is co-hosted by:

  • Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), South Africa
  • Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO)
  • Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI)
  • Science Diplomacy Capital of Africa (SDCfA) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
  • Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf)
  • South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS)
  • African Academy of Sciences (AAS)
  • The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)

Programme Structure

  • Introductory Online Sessions: 15 – 17 October 2025
  • Main Programme (Hybrid/In-Person): 19 – 24 October 2025
  • Final Evaluation (Online): 24 October 2025

The school runs over 10 days with a combination of online and in-person sessions hosted in South Africa.


Costs and Support

Participation is free of charge for all selected candidates. Limited funding is available for international participants to support travel and accommodation costs.

However, please note:

  • Not covered: visa fees, medical costs, or incidental/personal expenses.
  • International participants should plan accordingly if selected.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are open to:

  • Early to mid-career researchers in both the social sciences and natural sciences, especially within Africa.
  • Policymakers and government officials engaged in international cooperation or evidence-informed policymaking.
  • Members of the diplomatic community.

Application Requirements

Applicants must prepare the following:

  • Online application form
  • Motivation letter (max 200 words) – clearly state your interest, relevance to your work, and expected contribution
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) (max 3 pages)
  • Endorsement letter from employer or institution confirming support and availability for the programme duration
