    The Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence Scheme is now open for applications, offering a unique opportunity for experienced industrial scientists and entrepreneurs to embed themselves within UK universities. This initiative plays a critical role in bridging the gap between academic research and industrial innovation, ultimately promoting commercialisation, mentoring, and stronger university–industry collaborations.

    About the Scheme

    The Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) Scheme is a flagship programme under the Royal Society’s Science, Industry and Translation portfolio. The scheme invites seasoned entrepreneurs and industrialists to spend one day per week within a UK university over a two-year period. The aim is to share industry knowledge, stimulate innovation, and support the development of entrepreneurial skills among academic researchers and students.

    What Does the Scheme Offer?

    Successful applicants will receive up to £25,000 per year, covering:

    • Salary contribution (based on 0.2 full-time equivalent)
    • Travel and subsistence
    • Relevant project costs

    The funding supports entrepreneurs in working directly with academic institutions to develop strategic innovation projects, train researchers, and foster a culture of enterprise.


    Who Can Apply?

    The scheme is open to individuals with a robust background in:

    • Industrial research and development (R&D)
    • Business creation and commercialisation
    • Translational science or engineering
    • Mentoring in entrepreneurial environments

    You must propose a bespoke project in collaboration with a UK university. The project should demonstrate measurable impact in knowledge transfer, capacity building, and university–industry engagement.

    Applicants can be of any nationality, but must have the right to work in the UK.


    Application and Selection Process

    Applications are submitted through the Royal Society’s Flexi-Grant® portal. Proposals will be reviewed by subject matter experts and overseen by the Society’s Science, Innovation and Translation Committee.

    Final decisions are expected to be communicated by 19 December 2025.
