    Centre for International Security at the Hertie School International Security Fellowship 2026–2027

The Centre for International Security at the Hertie School International Security Fellowship 2026–2027 offers a unique opportunity to engage with leading experts, expand your academic network, and conduct impactful research in Berlin, Germany.


    About the International Security Fellowship 2026–2027

    The Centre for International Security at the Hertie School International Security Fellowship 2026–2027 is a non-stipendiary fellowship designed for both junior and senior researchers whose work aligns with the Centre’s core research areas.

    Fellows are welcomed into a vibrant academic community, gaining access to the Hertie School’s library, research events, and opportunities for collaboration. While this fellowship does not offer financial remuneration, it provides unmatched academic exposure and institutional support for impactful research.


    Core Research Areas

    Applicants are expected to focus on one or more of the Centre’s four main research areas:

    1. Nuclear Policy – addressing contemporary and emerging challenges in global nuclear strategy.
    2. States and Non-State Actors – examining power dynamics, conflicts, and international relations.
    3. Grand Strategy – exploring long-term strategic thinking and global power competition.
    4. Digital Technology and Security – analysing cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and digital threats.

    Fellowship Duration and Location

    The fellowship can be undertaken for one semester or a full academic year:

    • Fall Semester: September – January
    • Spring Semester: February – June
    • Full Academic Year: September – June

    Fellows are expected to spend time in Berlin and actively participate in the Centre’s activities, including colloquia, research seminars, and events. Access to desk space may be provided, depending on availability.


    Eligibility Criteria

    The fellowship is open to junior and senior researchers from around the world. Eligible candidates include:

    • Individuals who already hold a Ph.D.
    • Those currently pursuing a Ph.D. in fields such as political science, sociology, economics, or related disciplines.

    Applications are welcomed from all countries, with a special encouragement for women and minorities to apply.


    Application Requirements

    Applicants must submit the following documents:

    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé
    • Letter of Motivation clearly outlining how their research aligns with one or more of the Centre’s core research areas.

    All applications must be submitted exclusively through the online portal. Submissions via email or other formats will not be accepted.

    • Application Deadline: 31 October 2025

    Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare their documents early to avoid last-minute submissions.


    Funding Information

    Please note that this is a non-stipendiary fellowship. The programme does not provide salary or financial support, meaning applicants must have their own funding to cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses in Berlin.

    However, fellows benefit from:

    • Access to Hertie School’s academic environment and library.
    • Opportunities to network with top researchers and policy experts.
    • Participation in research colloquia, seminars, and collaborative projects.
    • Institutional affiliation and visibility within the international security research community.
