    I Tatti Residential Fellowships 2026-2027

    Deadline: October 15, 2025

Are you a scholar working on the Italian Renaissance and looking for the perfect environment to advance your research? The I Tatti Residential Fellowships 2026-2027 at Harvard University offer a unique opportunity to pursue cutting-edge projects in Florence, Italy, while benefiting from world-class resources, intellectual exchange, and financial support.

This prestigious fellowship is one of the most sought-after opportunities for post-doctoral scholars specialising in Renaissance studies, with an emphasis on Italy between the 14th and 17th centuries, including transnational and cross-cultural dimensions.

    About the Fellowship

The I Tatti Residential Fellowships are awarded annually to scholars pursuing research on the Italian Renaissance. Fellows spend a 12-month residential term at the Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, where they benefit from the extraordinary resources of the Biblioteca Berenson, and take part in seminars, workshops, lectures, concerts, and conferences.

Each year, 15 fellowships are granted to exceptional scholars whose work reflects originality, feasibility, and significant contribution to Renaissance studies.

    Fellowship Benefits

Selected fellows will enjoy the following benefits:

    • Stipend: USD $65,000 for the fellowship year.
    • Housing: Rent-free housing on the I Tatti property (subject to availability) or a housing subsidy if apartments are not available.
    • Additional Support: Relocation supplement and weekday lunches provided at I Tatti.
    • Academic Environment: Full access to the Biblioteca Berenson and participation in the intellectual life of the Harvard Center, including the requirement to present progress on their research project.

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the I Tatti Residential Fellowships 2026-2027, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a PhD (or equivalent) awarded between January 1, 2015 and September 1, 2025.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in English or Italian, and the ability to understand both languages.
    • Submit a research project that focuses on the Italian Renaissance (14th–17th centuries), with openness to comparative or cross-cultural studies.
    • Not be currently working towards a second PhD. If two doctorates are held, eligibility is determined by the most recent one within the time window.

    Special Fellowship Opportunity

Among the 15 awards, one fellowship (sponsored by the Florence Gould Foundation) is reserved specifically for:

    • Scholars working on Franco-Italian Renaissance topics, or
    • Applicants who are French citizens, or
    • Scholars residing in France.

    Selection Considerations

    Applications are evaluated on:

    • The originality, quality, and feasibility of the proposed research.
    • How effectively the project can be advanced using resources available in Florence.
    • The applicant’s track record of scholarship and potential to contribute to Renaissance studies.
    • Language competence, as many primary sources are available in Italian.

    Application Process

    • All applications must be submitted electronically.
    • Proposals can be written in English or Italian.
    • Deadline for submission: October 15, 2025 (midnight, Cambridge, MA time).

    Why Apply?

The I Tatti Residential Fellowships 2026-2027 at Harvard University provide not only financial support but also an extraordinary intellectual community and access to unmatched research resources. This is a chance to live and work in Florence, the heart of Renaissance history, and engage in a rich cultural and scholarly environment.
