    The RECAS Fellowship 2025 is now open for applications! Organised by the Regional Network of Centres for Advanced Studies in Southeast Europe (RECAS), this fellowship provides early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral scholars with the opportunity to conduct advanced research and contribute to shaping political, social, and cultural discourse in the Western Balkans.

    This year’s fellowship focuses on the theme: “Youth Agency and New Political Imaginaries in the Western Balkans.”

    Applications close on October 3, 2025.


    About the Fellowship

    The RECAS Fellowship 2025 offers scholars the chance to spend up to six months developing independent research projects. Fellows are hosted primarily at the Universities of Rijeka (Croatia) and Belgrade (Serbia), with the option of co-hosting at partner universities in Skopje, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Prishtina, Tirana, or Podgorica.

    During the fellowship, participants will:

    • Engage with local scholarly communities.
    • Conduct fieldwork and apply innovative methods.
    • Test new approaches and link academic research to societal challenges in Southeast Europe.

    Fellowship Benefits

    Selected fellows will receive:

    • A monthly stipend of €1,500 (net).
    • Institutional support, office space, and access to local research networks.

    Please note: Fellows will be responsible for regional travel and healthcare costs.


    Expected Outputs

    Fellows will be required to:

    • Produce a research essay or policy brief.
    • Participate in a Policy Hackathon.
    • Present findings during Surgery Week.
    • Contribute to the Academic Policy Lab repository.
    • Submit a final activity report.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must:

    • Be PhD holders or PhD candidates in advanced stages of their studies.
    • Demonstrate fluency in English.
    • Come from or work on topics related to Southeast Europe, especially within the humanities, social sciences, and arts.
