    The ESSA Research Grants on Foundational Learning 2025 are now open for applications. These research grants are designed to support impactful studies that strengthen Foundational Learning (FL) in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia. The initiative aims to generate evidence that can inform education policy and practice across these countries.

    This programme is part of Phase 2 of ESSA and the REAL (Research for Equitable Access and Learning) Centre’s project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Partnership for Education’s Knowledge & Innovation Exchange (KIX).


    Grant Value and Scope

    • Each research grant is valued at up to US$15,000.
    • Up to four grants will be awarded per country (Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia).
    • The grant can be used to cover:
      • Researcher time and direct research expenses
      • Research materials
      • Data collection
      • Report design and dissemination
      • Travel expenses for collaboration meetings

    Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for the ESSA Research Grants on Foundational Learning 2025, applicants must:

    • Be a PhD holder.
    • Be based at a university, research institute, or government department/ministry in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, or Zambia.
    • Be a citizen of the relevant country.
    • Submit applications and research reports in English, or in French for Senegal-based applicants.

    4. Highlights collaboration strategies where relevant.
