The ESSA Research Grants on Foundational Learning 2025 are now open for applications. These research grants are designed to support impactful studies that strengthen Foundational Learning (FL) in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia. The initiative aims to generate evidence that can inform education policy and practice across these countries.
This programme is part of Phase 2 of ESSA and the REAL (Research for Equitable Access and Learning) Centre’s project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Partnership for Education’s Knowledge & Innovation Exchange (KIX).
Grant Value and Scope
- Each research grant is valued at up to US$15,000.
- Up to four grants will be awarded per country (Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia).
- The grant can be used to cover:
- Researcher time and direct research expenses
- Research materials
- Data collection
- Report design and dissemination
- Travel expenses for collaboration meetings
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the ESSA Research Grants on Foundational Learning 2025, applicants must:
- Be a PhD holder.
- Be based at a university, research institute, or government department/ministry in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, or Zambia.
- Be a citizen of the relevant country.
- Submit applications and research reports in English, or in French for Senegal-based applicants.
