MFWA DPI Journalism Fellowship – Phase II

    Deadline: September 12, 2025

Applications are now open for the MFWA DPI Journalism Fellowship – Phase II (Nigeria Only). This fellowship, implemented by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), is designed to support Nigerian journalists in strengthening their capacity to report on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Digital Public Goods (DPGs).

With the growing importance of digitalisation in governance, service delivery, and inclusion, the programme seeks to build a core of skilled journalists who can shape informed public discourse around digital innovation in Nigeria.

    Fellowship Overview

    • Programme Duration: Six months (October 2025 – March 2026)
    • Cohort Size: Up to 15 experienced Nigerian journalists
    • Mode of Delivery: Hybrid – combining virtual training sessions with in-person capacity-building workshops in Nigeria
    • Follow-up Support: Quarterly online refresher engagements

    Fellowship Outputs

    Selected fellows will:

    • Produce at least six impactful stories focusing on Digital Public Infrastructure and Digital Public Goods.
    • Publish these stories within their media organisations.
    • Receive a certificate of participation upon successful completion.

    • Travel grants for top reporters to participate in international convenings and training on DPI/DPG issues.

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the MFWA DPI Journalism Fellowship – Phase II (Nigeria Only), applicants must:

    • Be based in Nigeria and actively engaged in journalism.
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills, diligence, and research abilities.
    • Show evidence of a positive attitude and the ability to collaborate effectively.
    • Have basic knowledge, interest, or prior experience in ICT, digitalisation, or DPI-related issues.

    • A statement of support from their media organisation.

    Context and Background

The MFWA DPI Journalism Fellowship was first introduced in 2023, with the goal of equipping West African journalists to report knowledgeably on Digital Public Infrastructure and Digital Public Goods. Earlier editions included participants across the West African sub-region.

This current phase, however, focuses exclusively on Nigeria to build a strong, country-specific pool of media professionals who can drive conversations and accountability in digital governance and inclusion.

    Application Deadline

The deadline for applications is 12 September 2025.
