Applications are now open for the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) 2026–2027 at Columbia University. This prestigious programme empowers dedicated advocates by equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to advance human rights causes in their communities.


    About the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP)

    Hosted by the Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) at Columbia University, the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) provides intensive academic, practical, and networking opportunities for human rights defenders worldwide.

    The 2026–2027 programme combines:

    • Academic seminars and coursework at Columbia University.
    • Skill-building workshops with human rights professionals.
    • Networking engagements with policymakers, NGOs, and funders.

    This unique opportunity allows participants to gain critical insights, exchange knowledge, and develop strategies to amplify their advocacy impact.


    Application Deadline

    All applications must be submitted by Monday, December 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). Early preparation is strongly encouraged due to the competitive nature of the programme.


    Eligibility Criteria

    The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) 2026–2027 is specifically designed for grassroots human rights activists. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Focus Areas: Advocacy in areas such as:
      • Sexual and gender-based violence
      • Minority and indigenous rights
      • LGBTQI+ rights
      • Labour rights
      • Migration and displacement
      • Health and social exclusion
      • Environmental justice
      • Disability rights
      • Corporate social accountability
    • Professional Engagement:
      • Must be working full-time in a human rights advocacy organisation.
      • Full-time students, academics, and government officials are not eligible.
    • Geographical Considerations:
      • Applicants from high-income countries may be excluded unless representing marginalised or underrepresented communities.
    • Language & Commitment:
      • Fluent English is required.
      • Must obtain an institutional endorsement letter in English confirming support and a commitment to return to the organisation post-programme.
    • Education:
      • A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory.

    Programme Structure & Timeline

    The HRAP fellowship includes:

    • Pre-Program Online Training: November–December 2026 (tentative).
    • In-Person Residency in New York City: Mid-January to mid-May 2027 (tentative).

    This structure allows participants to build foundational knowledge before engaging in the immersive on-campus experience.


    Funding Information

    HRAP strives to make participation accessible:

    • The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) works to secure funding for selected advocates.
    • In cases where full funding cannot be provided, shortlisted candidates may need to identify additional financial support.
