    The Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program 2026–2027 is now accepting applications from established professionals and researchers in the heritage conservation field. This highly competitive residency opportunity offers selected scholars the chance to deepen their research, collaborate with peers, and make use of the exceptional resources available at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles.


    About the Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program

    The Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program 2026–2027 supports independent scholars and practitioners in conservation, heritage science, and related fields. Participants undertake a three-month residency at the Getty Conservation Institute, benefitting from a stimulating research environment, peer collaboration, and access to Getty’s facilities.

    Residencies are structured into three possible terms:

    • September – December
    • January – March
    • April – June

    Grant Benefits

    Successful applicants will receive:

    • Grant award of USD 21,500 for each three-month residency.
    • Accommodation in Getty scholar housing.
    • Workstation at the Conservation Institute.
    • Research assistance and access to Getty resources.
    • Travel stipend to cover relocation costs.
    • Healthcare option during the residency.

    Eligibility Criteria

    The program is open to scholars and professionals of all nationalities with significant contributions to the field of conservation or heritage science. Key requirements include:

    • At least seven years of professional experience.
    • A strong record of publications or professional contributions.
    • Open to researchers, practitioners, and professionals in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, and related disciplines.

    Who Should Not Apply

    • Those pursuing postdoctoral or degree-related research projects.
    • Recent PhD graduates in chemistry or the physical sciences (these candidates should apply instead to the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science).
    • Projects requiring laboratory access are not guaranteed approval.
    • Previous Getty Conservation Guest Scholars may reapply only after a six-year waiting period.
    • Getty staff and immediate family are not eligible.

    Application Timeline and Deadline

    • Application Deadline: October 1, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Los Angeles time (GMT–7).
    • All applications undergo a competitive review based on:
      • Quality of the proposal.
      • Contribution to conservation practice.
      • Applicant’s professional achievements.
      • Relevance and benefit of using Getty’s resources.
