    Global Index on Responsible AI

    Deadline: July 31, 2025

Are you a policy-savvy researcher passionate about ethical and inclusive AI? The Global Index on Responsible AI: Country Researcher Call 2025 is now open for applications! This is your chance to be part of a pioneering initiative measuring how governments worldwide are adopting responsible AI policies grounded in human rights.

The Global Index on Responsible AI – Country Researcher Call 2025 is coordinated by the Global Center on AI Governance and is supported by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

About the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI)

The Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) is a comprehensive global initiative designed to track and benchmark national efforts towards responsible artificial intelligence implementation. The index covers over 140 countries, focusing on both government and non-state actors. It generates open-access, rights-based data that guides AI governance globally.

GIRAI’s first edition, released in 2024, revealed significant global disparities—especially across Africa. For example, Nigeria ranked 80th out of 138 countries, with a score of just 7.21/100, underperforming in AI capacity and governance.

The second edition of GIRAI is underway, with field research set to run from October to December 2025, following a mandatory training programme in September 2025.

    Role of the Country Researcher

As a Country Researcher, your key responsibilities will include:

    • Conducting primary data collection in your country
    • Engaging with stakeholders and documenting local AI efforts
    • Applying GIRAI’s methodology using the provided survey tools and Researcher’s Handbook
    • Meeting data quality standards, deadlines, and ethical requirements

This is a flexible remote role best suited for policy analysts, tech researchers, or academics interested in AI, digital rights, or governance.

    Time Commitment and Compensation

    • Estimated time: 60–80 hours between October and December 2025
    • Remuneration: Between USD 1,000–3,000, depending on complexity and cost of living

This is a freelance research opportunity with a clearly defined timeframe and deliverables.

    Eligibility Criteria

    To qualify, you should:

    • Have experience in AI governance, tech ethics, digital rights, or related areas
    • Demonstrate strong research skills (qualitative and/or policy-focused)
    • Be fluent in English and at least one official language of your country
    • Be adept at conducting stakeholder interviews, online research, and documentation
    • Be highly organised and responsive to deadlines
    • Have access to reliable internet (minimum 25 Mbps)

Applicants must also confirm no conflict of interest and the ability to work independently.

    Timeline

    • Application Deadline: July 31, 2025
    • Notification of Selected Researchers: September 8, 2025
    • Mandatory Training: September 2025
    • Research Implementation: October to December 2025

    Why This Matters

By participating in this project, you’ll contribute to global policy, amplify underrepresented voices, and influence responsible AI development at a national and international scale. GIRAI’s findings are instrumental in shaping regulatory frameworks, funding strategies, and capacity-building efforts in the AI ecosystem.
