    IEJ Feminist Economics Summer School 2025

Hosted by the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ), this prestigious program offers a fully funded, in-person learning experience in Johannesburg, South Africa, from September 1–5, 2025. The IEJ Feminist Economics Summer School 2025 is a must-apply opportunity for emerging scholars, activists, and practitioners shaping equitable economic futures.

    About the IEJ Feminist Economics Summer School

    Now in its fifth year, the IEJ Feminist Economics Summer School serves as a platform for advancing feminist perspectives in economic research, policy, and advocacy across the African continent. Organized by the Johannesburg-based Institute for Economic Justice, the program aims to build critical capacity within African feminist economics and strengthen the African Feminist Economics Research and Policy Network (AFERPN).

    Participants will engage in intensive training covering both theoretical and applied feminist economics, with a focus on developing skills that are underrepresented in traditional economics education.


    Who Should Apply?

    You are eligible to apply if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

    • Hold a degree in economics, environmental sciences, social sciences, or politics
    • Are engaged in feminist economics research or advocacy

    Strongly encouraged to apply:

    • Women, LGBTQI+ individuals, ethnic and religious minorities, and persons with disabilities
    • Applicants residing in Africa (priority given to Southern Africa-based candidates)

    What the Fellowship Covers

    Selected participants will receive full funding to attend the summer school. This includes:

    • Travel expenses
    • Accommodation in Johannesburg
    • Visa costs, if required

    This ensures equitable access for diverse participants across Africa.


    Application Timeline

    • Application Opened: June 15, 2025
    • Application Deadline: July 30, 2025 (or earlier, once 200 applications are received)
    • Rolling Reviews: Applications are reviewed as they come in
    • Notification of Acceptance: Final week of July 2025

    Applicants must submit:

    1. A 500-word abstract outlining a feminist economics research or advocacy project you are working on or propose to develop
    2. A short CV (no more than 2 pages)
