    The NIAS Fellowship 2027–2028 presents an incredible opportunity for researchers in the humanities and social sciences to pursue advanced, independent study in a supportive and interdisciplinary academic environment in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

    This prestigious fellowship, offered by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS), provides scholars from around the world with the freedom, time, and resources to focus deeply on their research while engaging with an international community of leading academics.


    About the NIAS Fellowship 2027–2028

    The NIAS Fellowship 2027–2028 is an individual research fellowship designed to give scholars the opportunity to work on an independent project in the humanities or social sciences. Fellows become part of a vibrant, interdisciplinary community, engaging in daily academic exchange and intellectual exploration.

    Successful applicants will carry out their research for a period of five or ten months at NIAS, located in Amsterdam. The programme aims to stimulate academic excellence, foster collaboration, and promote cross-disciplinary learning among fellows from various fields.


    Fellowship Benefits

    Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support to ensure a productive research experience. The NIAS Fellowship 2027–2028 includes:

    • A stipend or Dutch University Grant, depending on eligibility and institutional arrangements.
    • Travel expenses to and from the Netherlands.
    • Office space and accommodation support during the fellowship period.
    • Full access to the NIAS library and academic resources.
    • Opportunities to organise expert workshops relevant to the fellow’s research interests.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the NIAS Fellowship 2027–2028:

    • Hold a PhD degree and have at least three years of academic experience after earning the doctorate.
    • Conduct research in the humanities or social sciences.
    • Be able to communicate fluently in English, as it is the working language at NIAS.
    • Applicants may apply with or without a permanent university or research institute position.
    • Scholars from all countries are welcome to apply.

    The selection process emphasises academic quality, originality, and the potential contribution of the proposed research to its respective field.


    Application Requirements

    Applicants are expected to submit the following materials:

    1. A comprehensive project proposal (up to 1,500 words) outlining the planned research.
    2. A detailed curriculum vitae (CV) and list of publications.
    3. Contact details of three international experts who may serve as referees.

    All applications must be submitted online through the NIAS application portal.

    • Application Deadline: 16 March 2026 (12:00 noon CET)

    Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, so candidates are strongly encouraged to prepare their documents well in advance.
