UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture 2026

    Deadline: February 28, 2026

The UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture 2026 is now open for nominations! This prestigious international award recognises individuals, groups, and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to the promotion, dissemination, and development of Arab culture worldwide. The prize honours those whose work fosters intercultural dialogue and strengthens understanding between Arab culture and other civilisations.

About the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture

Established in 1998, the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture was created in celebration of Sharjah’s designation as the Cultural Capital of the Arab Region. Jointly administered by UNESCO and the Government of the Emirate of Sharjah, the prize highlights exceptional achievements that promote Arab culture in its artistic, intellectual, and social dimensions.

Through this initiative, UNESCO seeks to honour the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in strengthening intercultural dialogue and preserving Arab heritage while promoting mutual understanding across cultures.

    Purpose of the Prize

The UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture aims to:

    • Recognise and reward remarkable contributions to the preservation, promotion, and revitalisation of Arab culture.
    • Encourage creativity and cultural exchange among artists, scholars, and cultural institutions.
    • Promote understanding between Arab culture and other cultures through art, research, literature, and intellectual dialogue.

By spotlighting Arab culture’s diversity and richness, the prize plays a vital role in fostering a more inclusive and culturally aware global society.

    Prize Details

    • Edition: 21st UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture 2026
    • Total Prize Amount: USD 60,000
    • Number of Laureates: Two (each receiving USD 30,000)
    • Deadline for Nominations: 28 February 2026

Each edition of the prize acknowledges two laureates whose works have demonstrated a significant impact in advancing the understanding and appreciation of Arab culture worldwide.

Note: Self-nominations are not accepted. All nominations must be submitted through UNESCO Member States, National Commissions for UNESCO, or UNESCO’s official partner NGOs.

    Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations undergo evaluation by an international jury of experts, who review candidates’ impact, originality, and contribution to cultural dialogue. Final recommendations are submitted to the Director-General of UNESCO, who makes the final selection of laureates.

Laureates are formally awarded during an official ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters or another designated UNESCO event, highlighting their achievements before a global audience.

Why the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture Matters

The UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture 2026 continues to serve as a symbol of cultural excellence and collaboration. It celebrates the enduring contributions of Arab artists, thinkers, and institutions to the global cultural landscape while encouraging intercultural partnerships.
