    The CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowship 2026 is a prestigious professional opportunity designed to support Indigenous journalists in Canada by providing hands-on newsroom experience, financial support, and a platform to report on Indigenous stories that matter.     About the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowship 2026

    The CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowship 2026 is a four-month, in-person fellowship hosted at a CBC location in Canada. Fellows will work closely with CBC Indigenous teams, developing original journalism projects that explore issues affecting Indigenous communities.

    The programme is designed to strengthen Indigenous representation in Canadian media and to support emerging voices committed to impactful, ethical journalism.


    Purpose of the Fellowship

    The primary aim of the fellowship is to foster greater understanding of Indigenous issues within Canadian media. By embedding Indigenous journalists within a national newsroom, the programme encourages thoughtful, well-researched storytelling that reflects Indigenous perspectives and lived experiences.

    Fellows are expected to propose and develop a reporting project that aligns with CBC Indigenous editorial priorities and contributes meaningfully to public discourse.


    Who Can Apply (Eligibility Criteria)

    Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

    • Identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
    • Have between 1 and 10 years of professional journalism experience
    • Demonstrate a strong interest in reporting on Indigenous issues
    • Be eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the fellowship

    This opportunity is best suited to early- to mid-career journalists seeking to expand their skills and professional networks.


    Fellowship Duration and Location

    • Duration: Four months
    • Period: September to December 2026
    • Format: In-person
    • Location: A CBC location in Canada

    Fellows are required to work on-site throughout the fellowship period and are responsible for arranging their own accommodation.


    Financial Support and Benefits

    Selected fellows will receive:

    • A CAD 30,000 stipend, paid in semi-monthly instalments
    • Editorial mentorship and professional guidance from CBC Indigenous journalists
    • The opportunity to produce a journalism project that may be considered for publication or broadcast by CBC News
    • Valuable newsroom experience within one of Canada’s leading media organisations

    What Fellows Will Do

    During the fellowship, participants will:

    • Work closely with CBC Indigenous editorial teams
    • Research, develop, and produce an original reporting project
    • Gain practical experience in a national newsroom environment
    • Contribute to journalism that highlights Indigenous stories and perspectives
