This fully funded postgraduate opportunity offers talented individuals across Africa the chance to undertake world-class research training aimed at shaping sustainable African development.


    About the Programme

    The Masters by Research in Sustainable African Futures (MScR) is a jointly delivered postgraduate research programme offered by the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa and the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

    This unique programme provides advanced research training in sustainability issues tailored to African contexts. It combines interdisciplinary academic learning with practical research experience designed to strengthen the capacity of African researchers and institutions.


    Programme Overview

    The MScR in Sustainable African Futures is a research-focused master’s degree that includes structured academic training and the completion of an 18,000-word dissertation.
    The programme is delivered primarily online, ensuring flexibility for students across the continent, while also featuring in-person components through two Sustainability Schools hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa.

    Students will gain in-depth knowledge in research design, data analysis, African development, and interdisciplinary sustainability studies.


    Scholarship Coverage and Benefits

    Successful applicants to the University of the Witwatersrand & University of Edinburgh Masters by Research in Sustainable African Futures 2026 will receive full financial support for the 12-month duration of the programme. The scholarship covers:

    • Full tuition and research fees
    • Participation in the Sustainability Schools, including visa, accommodation, travel, and subsistence costs
    • Monthly stipend for early-career researchers or to support academic staff with workload relief
    • Laptop and internet connectivity support (where applicable)
    • Access to extensive online academic resources and digital libraries

    This comprehensive funding ensures that scholars can focus entirely on their research and academic development without financial constraints.


    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:

    • Hold a relevant bachelor’s degree qualifying for master’s study at the University of Edinburgh (equivalent to a UK 2:1 honours degree).
    • Demonstrate English language proficiency appropriate for postgraduate research.
    • Belong to one of these categories:
      • Recent graduates from one of the 14 partner African universities with demonstrated research interests.
      • Individuals currently participating in research projects within a partner university.
      • University staff (lecturers, early-career researchers, or professional services staff) at partner institutions.
    • Have completed their most recent degree within the past 3.5 years.
    • Be 35 years of age or younger at the start of the programme.
    • Be a citizen, permanent resident, or refugee in an African country.

    Programme Duration and Structure

    The Masters by Research in Sustainable African Futures 2026 runs for 12 months full-time. Participants will engage in both online coursework and collaborative research workshops hosted by Wits University.
    In-person engagement through the Sustainability Schools provides practical, community-based insights into African sustainability challenges and strategies.

    • Curriculum Vitae (CV), including academic background and any publications
    • Final official degree certificate
    • Official academic transcripts
