The AAAS‑TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy 2026 is a highly regarded, in‑person international training programme designed to strengthen the interface between science, policy and diplomacy. Jointly organised by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the course equips scientists and decision‑makers with practical knowledge and skills to use science as a tool for international cooperation and evidence‑based policymaking.
The AAAS‑TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy 2026 brings together early‑career scientists and policy professionals from around the world to address global challenges through scientific collaboration and diplomatic engagement.
Programme Overview
The course focuses on the theory and practice of science diplomacy, exploring how scientific expertise can inform foreign policy, support international negotiations, and foster collaboration across borders. Participants will engage in interactive lectures, case studies, group discussions and practical exercises led by experienced practitioners in science diplomacy.
Since its inception, the programme has trained hundreds of participants from more than 50 countries, creating a global network of science and policy leaders.

Application Deadline
- 29 January 2026 (by midnight, Central European Time – CET)

Who Should Apply
Applications must be submitted using the participant pair model, meaning two complementary professionals apply together.
1. Early‑Career Scientist (ECS)
The Early‑Career Scientist should:
- Preferably be 40 years old or younger
- Have completed a PhD degree
- Be actively engaged in scientific research
- Demonstrate interest or experience in international policy, global challenges or science diplomacy
2. Decision‑Maker (DM)
The Decision‑Maker should:
- Work in science, technology or innovation policy
- Be a government official, diplomat, civil servant, policy adviser, representative of a research funding agency, or professional from a UN or other international organisation
- Have experience in decision‑making or policy formulation related to science and technology
There is no age limit or PhD requirement for Decision‑Makers.
Pair Requirements
- Both applicants should ideally be from the same country
- They do not need to be from the same institution
- They should share a strong interest in science diplomacy and international engagement
Eligibility
- Open to applicants from all countries
- Due to limited funding, priority financial support will be given to participant pairs from countries with little or no representation in previous editions of the course, including many developing and science‑and‑technology‑lagging countries
Funding and Financial Support
For selected participant pairs, the organisers will cover:
- International and local transportation
- Accommodation for the duration of the course
- Visa processing fees (where applicable)
- Meals and daily incidentals
Self‑Supported Participants
- A limited number of self‑supported pairs may also be selected
- Self‑supported participants must cover their own travel costs
- Meals and local transportation in Trieste will still be provided
