Food Banks Canada Capacity Boost Grant 2026

    Deadline: December 15, 2025

The Food Banks Canada Capacity Boost Grant 2026 aims to strengthen the ability of food banks across the country to accept, store, and distribute food more efficiently. This grant supports food banks in expanding their infrastructure, increasing their storage and transportation capacity, and ultimately improving access to nutritious food for people facing food insecurity.

As part of Food Banks Canada’s five-year strategic plan launched in 2025, the Capacity Boost Grant focuses on addressing logistical and operational challenges that hinder effective food distribution. The program provides financial support to enhance food handling, processing, and distribution infrastructure across Canada.

    Grant Objectives

The Food Banks Canada Capacity Boost Grant 2026 is designed to:

    • Enhance the operational capacity of food banks to manage increased food volumes.
    • Support infrastructure and equipment upgrades to improve food storage, transportation, and safety.
    • Strengthen cold chain systems to ensure proper handling of perishable goods.
    • Reduce structural barriers that limit access to food for individuals and families in need.
    • Promote equity by supporting organizations serving marginalized and remote communities, including those in Canada’s northern and Indigenous regions.

    Eligible Activities and Fundable Items

The grant supports a wide range of eligible expenses and activities that directly build food bank capacity. Examples include:

    1. Equipment and Infrastructure Upgrades

    • Refrigeration and cold storage equipment (fridges, freezers, walk-in coolers).
    • Food transformation and processing equipment such as industrial mixers, ovens, vacuum sealers, or freeze dryers.
    • Warehouse logistics tools including forklifts, pallet jacks, shelving systems, and racking.
    • Temporary off-site food storage solutions (with a long-term storage plan).

    2. Transportation and Logistics Support

    • Purchase or lease of vehicles such as refrigerated trucks, cargo vans, or trailers.
    • Retrofitting vehicles for food transport.
    • Short-term vehicle rentals or leases to meet increased demand.

    3. Facility Construction and Renovations

    • Construction or upgrading of loading docks, storage facilities, or walk-in freezers.
    • Minor construction works are allowed, provided the project is implemented between February 1 and August 31, 2026.

    4. Technology and Software Improvements

    • Inventory management systems and related equipment to improve food tracking and distribution efficiency.

    5. Food Safety and Energy Systems

    • Safe food handling tools and equipment to maintain food quality and hygiene.
    • Backup generators and related power systems to preserve cold chain operations during outages.

    6. Staffing Support

    • Part-time staffing costs may be considered if directly linked to the implementation of the funded project.

    Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants for the Food Banks Canada Capacity Boost Grant 2026 include:

    • Affiliate food banks that are members of provincial associations.
    • Provincial food bank associations across Canada.
    • Food banks and food security organizations located in Canada’s territories or remote regions.

    Additional Requirements

    • Each organization may submit only one application.
    • Collaborative applications from groups of food banks are allowed if all partners demonstrate measurable benefit.
    • Any outstanding grant reports from previous Food Banks Canada programs must be completed before applying.

The Food Banks Canada Capacity Boost Grant 2026 plays a vital role in strengthening food security infrastructure nationwide. By funding essential upgrades in storage, transportation, and processing capacity, the grant helps food banks operate more efficiently and respond better to community needs.
