Aga Khan Foundation Canada International Youth Fellowship 2026–2027

    Deadline: February 1, 2026

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada International Youth Fellowship 2026–2027 is an exceptional opportunity for young Canadians seeking to launch a career in international development. This 9-month program combines intensive training in Canada with hands-on field experience across countries in Africa and Asia through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

    About the Fellowship

The International Youth Fellowship (IYF) is designed for recent graduates and young professionals who are passionate about global issues and sustainable development. The program consists of a few weeks of pre-departure training in Canada, followed by an 8-month overseas placement with AKDN partner agencies.

Fellows are placed in one of two specialized streams, depending on their background and interests:

    • International Development Management (IDM): Focused on areas such as health, education, civil society strengthening, and rural development.
    • International Microfinance and Microenterprise (IMM): Centered around microfinance, enterprise development, and market or community development initiatives.

Through these placements, Fellows gain practical experience in project management, organizational development, and community engagement — developing leadership and technical skills essential for global development careers.

    Program Duration

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada International Youth Fellowship 2026–2027 runs for approximately nine months:

    • Pre-Departure Training: Conducted in Canada, offering comprehensive orientation and professional preparation.
    • Overseas Placement: Lasts about eight months in a host country in Africa or Asia, with fellows working alongside experienced development professionals.

    Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2026–2027 Fellowship cycle, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Be 30 years of age or younger by February 1, 2026.
    • Hold at least an undergraduate university degree.
    • Demonstrate a strong commitment to international development through professional, volunteer, or academic experiences.
    • Exhibit qualities of global citizenship, adaptability, and leadership potential.

    Fellowship Benefits

Selected Fellows receive comprehensive support to ensure a successful and impactful experience. Key benefits include:

    • Full coverage of international travel, accommodation, health insurance, and necessary vaccinations.
    • A modest living stipend for expenses during the overseas placement.
    • A professional development program offering hands-on experience and mentorship.
    • A one-time contribution of CAD $1,000 required from each successful candidate as part of the program commitment.

The program’s funding structure ensures that financial limitations do not hinder participation, making it a truly inclusive opportunity for young Canadian professionals.

    Key Dates

    • Application Deadline: February 1, 2026
    • Pre-Departure Training: Conducted shortly after selection in Canada
    • Field Placement: Approximately 8 months abroad (Africa or Asia)

    Important Notes

    • The Fellowship is only open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
    • Applicants must not be enrolled in any other academic program during the fellowship period.
