    Bloomberg Data Science PhD Fellowship 2026–2027

    The Bloomberg Data Science PhD Fellowship 2026–2027 is a prestigious and fully funded programme designed to support outstanding PhD students conducting advanced research in data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The fellowship provides generous financial support, a world-class internship experience, and mentorship from leading experts. This opportunity is ideal for doctoral candidates developing innovative research with real-world impact. The Bloomberg Data Science PhD Fellowship 2026–2027 aims to empower emerging researchers across technical fields and strengthen the future of data-driven innovation globally.


    About the Opportunity

    The fellowship supports doctoral research that advances state-of-the-art techniques in data science and AI. Fellows receive full financial sponsorship, professional guidance, and a 14-week paid summer research internship at Bloomberg. Research areas of interest for this cycle include:

    • Large Language Models (LLMs) and reasoning
    • Code generation
    • Human–AI interaction
    • Information retrieval and conversational systems
    • Knowledge graphs
    • Multimodal document understanding
    • Summarisation and content generation
    • Time-series modelling and AI for finance
    • Trustworthy AI, fairness, interpretability, and safety

    The fellowship may be renewed annually for up to three years based on performance and Bloomberg’s discretion.


    Eligibility

    Applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be full-time PhD students during the 2026–2027 academic year.
    • Expect to complete their doctoral programme no later than the end of 2029.
    • Maintain full-time enrolment for the duration of the fellowship.
    • Commit to attending the annual fellowship kickoff event every autumn (travel is sponsored if required).
    • Be available to complete a 14-week paid summer internship each year of funding.
    • Not be receiving funding from another industry-sponsored fellowship during the fellowship period.
    • Not work outside their university during the fellowship period unless approved by Bloomberg.
    • Have valid work authorisation for internship locations where required (Bloomberg does not sponsor visas).

    Benefits / Award Details

    Successful fellows will receive:

    • Full tuition support for the duration of the fellowship.
    • A USD 45,000 yearly living stipend, which can also support research expenses and conference travel.
    • A paid 14-week summer internship at Bloomberg offices in New York, London, or Toronto, starting summer 2026.
    • Mentorship from Bloomberg researchers, technical experts, and data scientists.
    • Access to advanced research environments and professional development support.

    Application Requirements / Documents

    Applicants must submit:

    • A Curriculum Vitae (CV).
    • A two-page research proposal (references excluded), written for a technical audience using the official Overleaf template.
    • At least one referee letter from a supervisor (with optional additional referee).
    • Complete referee contact details to enable timely submission of recommendation letters.

    Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.


    Timeline / Key Dates

    • Application Deadline: 14 December 2025 (11:59 PM AoE)
    • Notification of Awards: Approximately 9 February 2026

    How to Apply

    Candidates must complete an online application and upload all required documents before the deadline. Referees must submit their letters directly through the system.

    Applications are assessed based on academic excellence, research strength, clarity and relevance of the proposal, alignment with Bloomberg research areas, and demonstrated potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of data science.


    Additional Information / Terms

    • Fellows must attend annual fellowship events and complete internship requirements.
    • Fellowship renewal is based on research progress and Bloomberg’s assessment.
    • Visa sponsorship is not provided; applicants must have appropriate work authorisation.
    • Only non-industry financial support may be combined, depending on Bloomberg’s approval.
