    CRASSH Visiting Fellowships for Scholars from the Global South 2026–2027

    The Centre for Research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge is inviting applications for the CRASSH Visiting Fellowships for Scholars from the Global South 2026–2027. This prestigious fellowship offers scholars the unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, foster academic collaborations, and contribute to global conversations around the arts, humanities, and social sciences.


    About the Fellowship

    The CRASSH Visiting Fellowships for Scholars from the Global South aim to support exceptional scholars from higher education institutions in the Global South. Fellows will spend an in-person term (a minimum of 9 weeks and up to 12 weeks) at CRASSH, University of Cambridge, followed by a 9-month digital fellowship.

    The fellowship provides a platform for scholars to engage in interdisciplinary research, exchange ideas, and explore collaborative opportunities that address pressing global issues through academic and creative inquiry.


    Theme for 2027

    The 2027 fellowship will partner with the University’s Legacies of Enslavement Initiative. Research projects are expected to align with this theme, focusing on:

    • Slavery and resistance
    • Environmental and cultural legacies of plantation systems
    • Memory and heritage
    • Knowledge and power
    • Practices of repair and restoration

    Applicants are encouraged to design research proposals that contribute meaningfully to these areas, with innovative and contextually relevant approaches.


    Eligible Disciplines

    The fellowship is open to a wide range of disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, including but not limited to:

    • Anthropology
    • Archaeology
    • Art History
    • Digital Humanities
    • Environmental Studies
    • Geography
    • History
    • Museum Studies
    • Political Science
    • Sociology
    • Cultural Studies

    Fellowship Benefits

    Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support during their stay at the University of Cambridge. The fellowship package includes:

    • Return economy flight from the scholar’s home institution
    • Visa cost coverage, where applicable
    • Single ensuite accommodation at Wolfson College, Cambridge
    • Access to College facilities, including library, gym, and social spaces
    • Access to the University’s libraries, seminars, and research events
    • Subsistence allowance of £175 per week for food and local travel expenses
    • Desk space and computer access at CRASSH

    The fellowship offers an immersive academic experience within one of the world’s leading research institutions.


    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

    • Must be employed at a higher education or research institution in a Global South country, as defined by the OECD ODA list, with at least a 50% contract.
    • Must be working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
    • Must hold a PhD awarded at least five years prior to the application date.
    • Must have strong spoken English skills to actively engage in discussions and collaborative activities during the fellowship.

    Application Requirements

    Interested applicants must submit the following materials as part of their application:

    • A comprehensive CV outlining academic and professional achievements.
    • A letter of support from the Head of Department confirming institutional approval for leave of absence.
    • Responses to three key questions:
      1. Why are you applying for the CRASSH Visiting Fellowship for Scholars from the Global South?
      2. What research will you conduct during your time at Cambridge?
      3. What kind of event or engagement activity would you design while in residence?

    Applicants are encouraged to prepare well-structured, detailed responses that clearly communicate the significance and potential impact of their research.


    Duration and Commitment

    Fellows will spend one academic term (9–12 weeks) in person at the University of Cambridge. This will be followed by a 9-month digital fellowship, allowing for sustained engagement with the CRASSH community and continued research development.


    Selection Focus

    The selection committee will assess applications based on:

    • Relevance of the proposed research to the 2027 theme.
    • Quality, originality, and feasibility of the research project.
    • Potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and contribution to the CRASSH community.
    • Clarity and coherence of the proposed engagement event.
