    EUI Policy Leader Fellowship 2026-2027

    Deadline: 23 January 2026

The EUI Policy Leader Fellowship 2026-2027 offers an exceptional opportunity for mid-career policy professionals to deepen their impact, expand their expertise, and engage with a dynamic international community in Florence. This prestigious fellowship, hosted by the European University Institute, supports leaders who are shaping policy in government, civil society, media, international organisations, and beyond. The programme provides a structured environment to develop a policy project, collaborate with peers, and build leadership capabilities. The EUI Policy Leader Fellowship 2026-2027 stands out as one of the most influential non-academic fellowships in global governance and public policy.

    About the Opportunity

The Policy Leader Fellowship is hosted by the European University Institute (EUI) through the Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG). It is a residential, in-person fellowship that welcomes professionals from around the world to Florence, Italy. Fellows participate in the academic and policy-engagement life of the EUI while developing a substantial policy project.

Participants can choose between a 5-month or 10-month residency period, with most fellows beginning on 1 September 2026. The programme includes professional development workshops, specialised seminars, faculty-led projects, leadership training, mentorship, and opportunities to contribute to STG activities.

    Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be mid-career policy professionals with at least 10 years of relevant experience (e.g., public administration, NGOs, private sector, media, international organisations).
    • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
    • Demonstrate strong English proficiency (commonly at C1 level).
    • Show motivation, independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work cooperatively in a diverse cohort.
    • Note: Candidates with purely academic profiles are less competitive, as the programme prioritises applied policy practitioners.

    Benefits / Award Details

The fellowship provides comprehensive financial and professional support, including:

    • Monthly stipend: €2,500.
      • If a fellow receives other income or grants, the fellowship stipend may be adjusted (minimum €1,750/month).
    • Family allowances:
      • Up to €310/month for a partner living in Florence (subject to income thresholds).
      • €210/month per dependent child, supported by official documentation.
    • Travel reimbursement: Up to €1,200 total for incoming and outgoing travel.
    • Full participation in EUI/STG academic and leadership activities.
    • Access to the EUI Policy Leader Fellows alumni network upon completion.

    Application Requirements / Documents

    Applicants typically need to provide:

    • A detailed CV highlighting professional achievements.
    • A clear and feasible work plan describing the proposed policy project.
    • A motivation statement explaining alignment with STG themes and the value of the fellowship for the applicant’s career.
    • References (early application is recommended to give referees time).

    Timeline / Key Dates

    • Application Deadline: 23 January 2026, 14:00 CET.
    • Fellowship Start (most fellows): 1 September 2026.
    • Programme Duration: 5 or 10 months based on selected track.

    What Fellows Do

    During the fellowship, participants:

    • Develop a policy project (e.g., policy brief, toolkit, strategic analysis, or recommendations).
    • Engage in faculty-led collective projects aligned with STG’s priority thematic areas.
    • Attend workshops focused on leadership, negotiation, communication, writing, and strategy.
    • Participate in seminars, training sessions, and research discussions.
    • Contribute to the broader EUI community through mentoring, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.

    Selection Process

    Applications are evaluated based on:

    • Professional excellence and potential, as demonstrated in the applicant’s CV.
    • Relevance, feasibility, and potential impact of the proposed policy project.
    • Motivation and alignment with STG themes and programme objectives.
    • Diversity considerations, ensuring a balanced cohort across geography, sector, and discipline.

    Additional Information / Terms

    • The fellowship is strictly residential: fellows must reside in Florence full-time.
    • It is a full-time commitment, and persistent absence may result in grant reduction.
    • Fellows may need an EU-based bank account for stipend payments; EUI recommends Italian or EU online banking options.
    • Tax implications vary by country; fellows should review EUI’s practical guidance for clarity.
