    The Kroc Institute Visiting Research Fellows Program 2026-2027 offers a unique opportunity for scholars committed to advancing peace research. This prestigious programme supports researchers who wish to dedicate a semester or a full academic year to focused study in an intellectually stimulating environment. The Kroc Institute Visiting Research Fellows Program 2026-2027 provides an outstanding platform to deepen research, collaborate with leading experts, and contribute to global peacebuilding scholarship.

    About the Opportunity

    The fellowship is hosted by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. It is designed for exceptional scholars working in areas related to peace, conflict, justice, sustainability, or mediation. Applicants may request residency for either one semester or the full academic year. Fellows join a vibrant academic community and gain access to extensive support systems, including furnished housing and full use of institutional resources.

    Research Themes / Priority Areas

    Applicants must align their research proposal with one or more of the following thematic priorities:

    1. Intersection of Gender, Race, Class, and Peacebuilding

    Research intersecting identity, feminist approaches, power structures, and forms of structural violence.

    2. International Mediation

    Work focused on preventive diplomacy, national dialogues, and mediation processes for preventing or resolving conflict.

    3. Peace Accords Matrix (PAM)

    Research on peace accord design and implementation, including civil society involvement and transitional justice mechanisms.

    4. Sustainability, Climate Change, and Peace

    Research addressing environmental peacebuilding, climate vulnerability, illegal mining, deforestation, food insecurity, and related issues, with opportunities to engage with Notre Dame’s Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative.

    Benefits / Award Details

    Fellows receive:

    • A stipend of USD 30,000 per semester
    • Furnished housing at no cost
    • Full access to university libraries, internet, and document retrieval services
    • Integration into the Kroc academic community, including seminars, workshops, and collaborations

    Eligibility

    • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent) before the fellowship start date.
    • Doctoral candidates must complete their PhD before commencing the fellowship.
    • Previous Kroc Visiting Research Fellows must wait seven years after completing their prior fellowship before reapplying.

    Application Requirements

    A complete application includes:

    1. Cover Letter (maximum 2 pages)

    • Indicate preferred residency duration (one semester or full year).
    • Specify the research theme(s) for which the application is being submitted.

    2. Research Proposal (maximum 10 pages, double-spaced)

    • Detailed description of sources, data, and methodology
    • Work plan and proposed timeline
    • Expected outputs
    • Bibliography

    3. Curriculum Vitae

    An up-to-date CV outlining academic background, publications, and achievements.

    4. Two Letters of Recommendation

    Confidential letters submitted directly by referees attesting to the applicant’s academic competence and suitability for the fellowship.

    Timeline / Key Dates

    • Application Deadline: 31 January 2026
    • Notification: Decisions are made by a faculty committee following review of all applications
    • Fellowship Start: At the beginning of the selected academic semester (August or January)

    Selection Process

    Additional Information / Terms

    Applicants must be available for full-time residency during the chosen period. Participation in academic activities at the Kroc Institute is expected. Housing and stipend support are provided for the duration of the stay, and fellows gain access to all institutional research resources.
