    Applications are now open for the Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy 2026, an intensive 8-month incubation programme designed to empower young artisan entrepreneurs in South Africa. The academy offers a unique opportunity for aspiring tradespeople to develop entrepreneurial skills, grow sustainable businesses, and contribute meaningfully to the trades and construction sector. The Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy 2026 aims to nurture innovative minds with a passion for craftsmanship and business growth.


    About the Opportunity

    The Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy is a fully funded programme created to support artisans in four key trades — bricklaying, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. Over an eight-month period, participants receive hands-on business development training, mentorship, and access to networks that help them turn their technical expertise into thriving ventures.

    The 2026 cohort will commence in mid-April 2026 and will run for eight months. Throughout the duration of the programme, selected participants will receive a monthly transport allowance of R3,000 to support their attendance and participation.


    Eligibility Criteria

    To qualify for the Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
    • Be unemployed or self-employed, but not enrolled in full-time studies.
    • Be engaged in one of the four eligible trades: bricklaying, carpentry, electrical, or plumbing.
    • Meet at least one of the following qualification or experience requirements:
      • Hold a trade-test qualification in the relevant trade; or
      • Have three years of work experience in the relevant trade and be ready to take the trade test; or
      • Possess an N2 Certificate plus three years of work experience in the relevant trade.

    Applicants are also required to submit supporting documentation, including:

    • A valid South African ID
    • Proof of work experience or service letters
    • Copies of N2 Certificate, National Technical Diploma, or trade-test certificate, as applicable
    • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) is advantageous but not compulsory.
