About the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling 2026
The award is organised by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with ONE Campaign and the Elliott family. It honours the legacy of Michael Elliott, an influential editor and journalist who championed high-quality storytelling centred on Africa.
The programme supports early-career journalists demonstrating excellence in reporting that highlights meaningful developments, challenges, and solutions across Africa. The winner receives international recognition, a monetary award, and a rare professional development opportunity with a globally renowned newsroom.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Open to English-speaking journalists working in Africa.
- Eligible media formats: print, broadcast, digital, video, audio, or mixed multimedia.
- Applicants must have no more than 10 years of journalism experience.
- Applicants must submit one published piece (in English or translated to English) that:
- Was published between 1 December 2024 and 1 December 2025.
- Demonstrates strong storytelling, depth of analysis, clarity, and meaningful impact.
- Focuses on issues of transformational change within African communities or systems.

Application Requirements
