Are you a U.S. professional with a strong interest in European security and foreign policy? The Robert A. Belfer International Affairs Fellowship in European Security 2026-2027 offers an incredible opportunity for mid-career experts to advance their research, strengthen their expertise, and build transatlantic cooperation.

This prestigious fellowship is designed to foster deeper understanding of European security challenges while supporting the career development of mid-career professionals dedicated to foreign policy and international affairs.

About the Robert A. Belfer International Affairs Fellowship in European Security 2026-2027

The Robert A. Belfer International Affairs Fellowship in European Security 2026-2027 is a fully funded opportunity that allows U.S. citizens to undertake a research or professional placement at a European institution — including think tanks, universities, government agencies, or international organisations — focused on the theme of European security.

Fellows are provided with financial support, research resources, and institutional access to expand their professional network and enhance their policy expertise in the European context.

    Fellowship Benefits

    Selected fellows will receive:

    • A stipend of US$120,000 for a full 12-month period (pro-rated if the fellowship is shorter).
    • A modest travel grant to support relocation and research travel within Europe.
    • Placement opportunities at leading European institutions such as think tanks, universities, government agencies, or international organisations.

The fellowship duration is flexible — ranging between 4 and 12 months — with funding adjusted based on the selected period.

    Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

    • Must be a U.S. citizen with a valid U.S. passport (valid through at least six months after the fellowship ends).
    • Must be a mid-career professional with a proven track record in international affairs, foreign policy, or related fields.
    • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
    • Demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in foreign policy, with a clear interest in European security issues.
    • Have excellent professional and academic qualifications relevant to international security and diplomacy.

    Selection Criteria

The selection committee evaluates applicants based on:

    • The quality, feasibility, and relevance of the proposed research or project to European security.
    • The applicant’s professional achievements, expertise, and potential for leadership in the field.
    • The personal qualities of the applicant, including integrity, character, and ability to foster international cooperation.
    • The potential benefit to the applicant’s career and the broader transatlantic policy community.

    Required Application Materials

Applicants will need to submit the following documents:

    1. Personal and professional information, including educational background and employment history.
    2. A detailed project proposal outlining research goals, methodology, and intended placement institution(s) in Europe.
    3. Two letters of support from professional or academic referees attesting to the applicant’s qualifications and commitment.

    Fellowship Duration

The fellowship can last between four and twelve months, depending on the fellow’s proposal and placement availability. Full stipends apply for 12-month terms, while shorter periods receive prorated funding.

    Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for the Robert A. Belfer International Affairs Fellowship in European Security 2026-2027 is October 31, 2025.

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, so applicants are encouraged to prepare and submit early.
