    TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme 2025-2026

    Deadline: December 9, 2025

The TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme 2025-2026 is a collaborative initiative by the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and UNESCO, designed to promote scientific research and collaboration in developing countries. The scheme aims to build and strengthen the capacity of researchers in the Global South while combating the persistent challenge of “brain drain.”

Through this opportunity, qualified scientists and researchers from developing nations can visit top research centres of excellence in the South for collaborative research. The programme helps participants build international networks, access world-class research facilities, and contribute to sustainable scientific growth in their home countries.

    Programme Overview

    • Organisers: TWAS in collaboration with UNESCO
    • Programme Duration: 3 years
    • Visits: Associates are expected to make two visits to the host institution during the three-year period for collaborative research and knowledge exchange.

The scheme not only supports capacity development but also fosters South-South cooperation by allowing researchers from developing countries to collaborate with their peers in similar contexts.

Benefits of the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme

Participants selected for the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme 2025-2026 will receive financial and institutional support to ensure a successful research stay.

    Key benefits include:

    • Travel support: Round-trip travel expenses for both visits will be covered by TWAS.
    • Monthly stipend: Associates receive a USD 300 monthly allowance to cover incidental local expenses during the visit.
    • Accommodation and facilities: The host centre provides accommodation, meals, and full access to research facilities.

This structure ensures that researchers can focus entirely on their scientific work without financial burden during the visits.

    Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme 2025-2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
    • Be a national of a developing country (in the Global South).
    • Work in a research or academic institution in their home country.
    • Show evidence of active research work and publication record.
    • Candidates from isolated or under-resourced institutions will receive special consideration.
    • Women scientists are strongly encouraged to apply.

This programme values diversity, scientific excellence, and equitable access to research opportunities across the developing world.

    Required Application Documents

Applicants must prepare and submit the following documents for their online application:

    1. Scanned passport page (showing name and surname; expired passports are accepted).
    2. Statement from the Head of the applicant’s home institution confirming the researcher’s employment and support.
    3. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – maximum of 4 pages.
    4. Complete list of publications.
    5. PhD certificate or equivalent qualification document.
    6. Two recommendation letters – one of which must be from an international expert in the applicant’s field.
    7. Invitation letter from one of the eligible host centres.
      • The invitation must be written on institutional letterhead.
      • It should specify the proposed duration of each visit (typically 2–3 months per visit).
      • It must detail the nature of collaboration and available facilities at the host centre.

Note: Applicants must obtain the invitation letter before applying. It is advisable to contact potential host institutions early to discuss collaboration interests and confirm available facilities.

    Choosing a Host Institution

Applicants are required to select their host institution from the list of approved TWAS-UNESCO research centres. These centres are recognised for excellence in scientific research across disciplines such as natural sciences, technology, agriculture, and health sciences.

    Before applying, researchers should:

    • Reach out to a potential host centre.
    • Discuss possible areas of collaboration.
    • Confirm the host’s willingness to provide an official invitation.

    Application Deadline

    • Deadline for submission: 9 December 2025

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, so early preparation is strongly encouraged.
