    Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants

    Deadline: March 8, 2026

The Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants programme supports journalists producing original reporting on artificial intelligence and its impact on society. The initiative provides funding to enable in-depth investigative journalism that examines how AI technologies influence politics, economies, labour markets, and global power structures.

Through the Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants, journalists can access financial support to pursue ambitious stories that require time, resources, and specialised tools. The programme aims to strengthen public understanding of artificial intelligence while holding companies, governments, and institutions accountable.

Overview of the Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants

The Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants provide financial support for journalists who want to investigate and report on artificial intelligence and its societal implications.

These grants are designed to enable impactful journalism by supporting reporting costs, travel, and research resources needed to produce high-quality stories.

Funded projects are expected to deliver well-researched reporting that informs the public and contributes to important conversations about the development and use of AI technologies.

    Grant Value

Successful applicants may receive funding ranging from:

    • $1,000 to $20,000 per project

The funding may be used to support:

    • Journalist time and labour
    • Reporting expenses
    • Travel costs
    • Data purchases
    • Access to APIs
    • Technical tools needed for investigative reporting
    • Other resources necessary to complete the proposed journalism project

This flexible funding structure allows journalists to pursue ambitious and resource-intensive reporting projects.

    Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for the Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants is:

    8 March 2026

Applications are typically reviewed within approximately four weeks after submission.

    Focus Areas

The programme supports journalism across several key areas related to artificial intelligence. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that fall within the following beats:

    1. Accountability Reporting on Frontier AI Companies

Investigative reporting examining the actions, practices, and influence of leading AI companies.

    2. AI Policy and Politics

Coverage exploring how governments regulate AI, how policies are shaped, and the political implications of AI development.

    3. AI Explainers and Analysis

In-depth reporting that helps audiences understand complex AI technologies, trends, and real-world applications.

    4. AI Use in Governments and Militaries

Stories examining how AI technologies are deployed by governments, defence agencies, and military institutions.

    5. AI Labour and Workforce Impacts

Reporting on how artificial intelligence is transforming employment, labour markets, and workplace dynamics.

    6. AI Developments in China

Coverage focused on China’s AI ecosystem, including policy, companies, and technological developments.

    Examples of Potential Reporting Projects

Applicants may propose stories such as:

    • Investigations into the operations and influence of AI companies
    • Analyses comparing AI capabilities with real-world outcomes
    • Reporting on automation and its effects on employment
    • Stories examining the deployment of AI by governments or military institutions
    • Deep dives into emerging AI policy debates

Projects may consist of single stories or multi-part series.

    Who Can Apply

The programme is open to journalists worldwide.

    Eligible applicants include:

    • Freelance journalists
    • Staff reporters
    • Editors
    • Media producers
    • Journalism teams

While experience covering artificial intelligence or technology is beneficial, it is not required. Journalists from other beats are welcome to apply if they have a strong reporting plan.

Investigative journalists are especially encouraged to submit proposals.

    Publication Requirements

Funded projects must be published by established media outlets.

    Important considerations include:

    • Applicants do not need to secure a publication outlet before applying.
    • However, before funding is disbursed, the applicant may need to provide a letter of interest from an editor.
    • The publication outlet must be able to accept grant-funded journalism.

    Application Evaluation Criteria

Applications are assessed based on several factors:

    1. Potential Impact

Does the proposed story contribute meaningfully to public understanding of artificial intelligence or influence policy discussions?

    2. Audience Reach

Will the reporting reach a significant or influential audience?

    3. Journalistic Experience

Does the applicant demonstrate a strong track record in journalism or investigative reporting?

    4. Feasibility

Is the reporting plan realistic, with a clear timeline and budget?

All proposals are reviewed by independent journalists, and donors do not influence editorial decisions.

    Additional Application Guidelines

    Applicants should note the following:

    • Teams may apply with a shared proposal.
    • Applicants may submit up to three story pitches.
    • Funding may support a series of articles rather than a single story.

    Disclosure Requirement

All published work funded by the programme must include the following statement:

“This story was supported by a grant from the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism.”

Why the Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants Matter

Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping economies, politics, and societies around the world. However, many AI systems remain opaque, and their impacts are often poorly understood by the public.

The Tarbell Center AI Reporting Grants aim to bridge this gap by empowering journalists to investigate the technology, examine its consequences, and inform public debate with accurate, independent reporting.

Through this programme, journalists can pursue ambitious stories that might otherwise be difficult to fund, ensuring that AI developments receive the rigorous scrutiny they deserve.
