About the APS-EPS-ICTP Travel Award Fellowship Programme 2026
The APS-EPS-ICTP Travel Award Fellowship Programme (ATAP) is a joint initiative of:
- ICTP – Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics
- APS – American Physical Society
- EPS – European Physical Society
- In partnership with the APS Forum on Early Career Scientists
The programme supports outstanding doctoral students and early-career physicists from developing countries by funding short-term international research visits that strengthen ongoing collaborations.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful applicants will receive:
- Up to €5,000 to cover major expenses related to the research visit
- Funding for a two consecutive-month research stay
- Opportunity to visit a laboratory in:
- Europe (excluding Italy)
- North America
- A more advanced developing country
All awarded funds must be used within the same calendar year in which the award is granted.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an outstanding doctoral student or early-career physicist (within 10 years of completing a PhD)
- Preferably be under 45 years of age
- Be a national of a developing country and currently studying or working there
- Plan a two-month research visit to a laboratory with which they already have an established collaboration (often an alma mater or known research institution)
This fellowship is specifically designed to promote scientific mobility and enhance research output among scientists from developing nations.

- A complete Curriculum Vitae (CV) including:
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Full publication list
- At least one letter of reference
- A letter of agreement from the host laboratory, confirming:
- Supervision arrangements
- Availability of workspace
- Institutional support for the visit
- A one-page motivation letter explaining how the research visit will advance your scientific career
- A one-page budget plan detailing estimated travel and local expenses
- Proof of PhD enrolment (for doctoral students)
