TADF Innovative Technologies: Disaster Management in South Africa – Call for Proposals

    Deadline: February 9, 2026

The TADF Innovative Technologies: Disaster Management in South Africa – Call for Proposals is an initiative of South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) aimed at supporting advanced, deployable technologies that can significantly strengthen disaster management systems across the country.

This call is issued under the Technology Acquisition and Deployment Fund (TADF) and focuses on identifying market-ready or near-market technologies that can be rapidly adopted to improve disaster preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation, and long-term resilience in South Africa.

The TADF Innovative Technologies: Disaster Management in South Africa – Call for Proposals seeks solutions that are practical, scalable, and suited to local and African contexts.

About the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA)

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is a public entity established by the Government of South Africa to support technological innovation and enable the development, acquisition, and deployment of technologies that contribute to socio-economic development.

Through targeted funding instruments such as TADF, TIA bridges the gap between innovation and real-world implementation.

    Purpose of the Call

This call aims to support innovative disaster management technologies that can enhance South Africa’s capacity to:

    • Anticipate and assess disaster risks
    • Improve preparedness and planning
    • Enable effective emergency response
    • Support recovery efforts
    • Strengthen long-term disaster resilience and mitigation

Selected technologies may also be included in a national database to facilitate future adoption by disaster management stakeholders across the country.

Focus Areas and Priority Technology Themes

The call welcomes solutions that address any stage of the disaster management cycle, including but not limited to the areas below.

    Risk Assessment and Early Warning

    • Flood, drought, and wildfire prediction systems
    • Satellite-based or sensor-driven monitoring tools
    • AI-enabled early warning and alert platforms
    • Community-level notification and communication technologies

    Preparedness

    • Scenario modelling and simulation tools
    • Decision-support systems for disaster planning
    • Digital training and preparedness platforms

    Response and Recovery

    • Drones and robotics for search, rescue, and damage assessment
    • Rapid mapping and situational awareness tools
    • Mobile command, coordination, and communication systems

    Resilience and Mitigation

    • Technologies that reduce long-term disaster risk
    • Community-based and adaptive resilience solutions
    • Innovations supporting sustainable recovery and risk reduction

    Who Can Apply

The call is open to South African-based entities, including:

    • Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs)
    • Start-ups
    • Non-profit organisations
    • Research and academic institutions
    • Community-based organisations

    Key eligibility requirement:
Proposed technologies must be commercially ready or at an advanced pilot stage, with clear potential for deployment and scale within South Africa and similar contexts.

    Funding Information

    • Maximum funding per project: Up to ZAR 1,000,000
    • Project duration: Approximately 12 to 18 months
    • Funding instrument: Technology Acquisition and Deployment Fund (TADF)

Funding is intended to support technology acquisition, deployment, adaptation, and implementation rather than early-stage research.

    Application Deadline

    • Closing date: 09 February 2026
    • Closing time: 17:00 (South African Standard Time)

Late submissions will not be considered.

    Why This Opportunity Matters

South Africa faces increasing climate-related and environmental disasters. This call provides a strategic opportunity for innovators to deploy practical technologies that directly support disaster management authorities, communities, and first responders—while contributing to national resilience and sustainable development.
