This fully funded opportunity is designed for early- to mid-career journalists who want to strengthen their investigative skills in climate and environmental reporting. The scholarship provides access to CIJ’s renowned Climate Investigations Course (CIC), a comprehensive online programme focused on producing impactful, data-driven climate journalism.


    About the CIJ Climate Investigations Training Scholarship 2026

    The Climate Investigations Training Scholarship 2026 by the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) is a unique opportunity aimed at empowering journalists committed to uncovering the realities of climate change. It offers selected candidates full participation in the Spring 2026 Climate Investigations Course, valued at up to £2,638.

    This course provides participants with a deep understanding of investigative tools, methodologies, and open-source intelligence techniques to report on climate-related issues with accuracy and impact.


    What the Training Covers

    The Climate Investigations Course (CIC) delivers 24.5 hours of expert-led instruction, covering essential modules in investigative climate journalism. Scholars will gain knowledge in the following areas:

    • Climate Investigation Fundamentals
    • Investigating Climate Finance
    • Data-Driven Climate Investigations
    • ECOSINT (Environmental and Climate Open Source Intelligence)

    Through these modules, participants will learn to gather and interpret data, verify information, and publish meaningful investigative reports that contribute to public understanding of climate change.


    Key Dates and Timeline

    Applicants should take note of the following important dates:

    • Applications open: 12 January 2026
    • Application deadline: 11 February 2026 (23:59 BST)
    • Offer notifications: By 25 February 2026
    • Course duration: 11 March – 7 May 2026

    Eligibility Criteria

    To qualify for the CIJ Climate Investigations Training Scholarship 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    1. Be an early- to mid-career journalist currently living and working in Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, West Asia, or South Asia.
    2. Have some experience in investigating or reporting environmental or climate issues, or show a strong commitment to building expertise in this area.
    3. Demonstrate advanced or professional-level English proficiency, including reading, writing, and speaking.
    4. Be committed to attending all training sessions and completing the course.
