The Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship 2027–2028 is now open for nominations! This prestigious fellowship recognizes exceptional researchers whose work bridges the gap between the humanities and/or social sciences and the natural and/or technological sciences.
This program, jointly organized by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) and the Lorentz Center, offers a unique opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research that fosters collaboration, innovation, and societal impact.
About the Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship
The Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship is awarded annually to an outstanding researcher who demonstrates the ability to connect diverse scientific perspectives. The program encourages innovative research that integrates insights from different disciplines, leading to new knowledge and broader societal understanding.
The fellowship period runs from September 2027 to January 2028, lasting a total of five months at NIAS in Amsterdam.
Objectives of the Fellowship
The key objectives of the Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship 2027–2028 include:
- Promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration between the humanities/social sciences and the natural/technological sciences.
- Encouraging research that addresses pressing societal challenges through scientific integration.
- Supporting scholars in producing work with a lasting academic and social impact.
- Strengthening the global network of researchers engaged in interdisciplinary studies.
Fellowship Benefits
Fellows selected for this distinguished program enjoy a wide range of benefits, including:
- Five-month residency at NIAS, with a private office and access to a vibrant interdisciplinary academic community.
- Personal stipend or grant, provided either directly to the fellow or to their host institution (for Dutch university affiliates).
- Accommodation or travel support, depending on individual circumstances.
- Fully supported Lorentz Center workshop, with a dedicated organizational team and a budget of €20,000 to host the workshop related to the fellowship research theme.

Eligibility Criteria
The Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship is by nomination only. Candidates cannot apply directly but must be nominated by senior members of the Dutch scientific community. Eligible nominators include:
- Rectors and deans of Dutch universities
- Boards and directors of KNAW, NWO, TNO, and affiliated institutes
- Directors of museums or industrial research organizations
- Boards of national scientific networks such as the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH) and The Young Academy (DJA)
Nominees must be outstanding researchers with a proven record of excellence and the ability to bridge disciplinary boundaries.
Nomination Procedure
Nominations must be submitted on behalf of the candidate and include the following documents:
- A formal nomination letter
- Project title and description
- A brief outline of the proposed NIAS-Lorentz workshop
- The nominee’s CV and selected publications
All documents should be submitted in English via email to the fellowship organizers.
Deadline for Nominations
The nomination deadline for the Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship 2027–2028 is 16 March 2026 at 12:00 noon (CET).
After submission, nominations will be evaluated by the NIAS-Lorentz Fellows Advisory Board, and successful nominees will be informed within approximately 12 weeks following the deadline.
