    Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment 2026

    The Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment 2026 is a prestigious international award recognising outstanding efforts to advance women’s and girls’ empowerment, gender equality, and inclusive participation in political, social, and economic life. Established in 2023, this annual prize celebrates impactful initiatives, organisations, and individuals whose work contributes meaningfully to women’s rights and leadership across the globe.

    Named in honour of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world’s first democratically elected female Head of State, the prize reflects her legacy of equality, inclusion, and women’s leadership.


    About the Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment 2026

    The Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment 2026 is awarded by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in partnership with the Government of Iceland. It aims to highlight and support transformative actions that strengthen women’s empowerment and promote gender equality in diverse contexts.

    The prize recognises contributions that:

    • Advance women’s and girls’ rights
    • Promote inclusive participation in decision-making
    • Strengthen women’s leadership across civil, political, and economic spheres
    • Support equality-driven policies and sustainable change

    Prize Value and Benefits

    The winner of the Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment 2026 will receive:

    • €60,000 financial award
    • A commemorative trophy
    • International recognition and visibility

    The award ceremony will take place on 22 June 2026 in Strasbourg, during the Summer Part-Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.


    Who Can Be Nominated

    Eligible nominees include:

    • Individuals (must be living at the time of nomination)
    • Civil society organisations, NGOs, and associations
    • Private companies actively promoting women’s empowerment

    Nomination Requirements

    • Each nomination must be supported by at least five sponsors
    • Nominations must demonstrate clear, measurable impact on women’s empowerment

    Not Eligible

    • Current members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

    Application Timeline

    • Call for nominations opens: Late 2025
    • Application deadline: 27 March 2026
    • Award ceremony: 22 June 2026

    Early preparation is strongly encouraged to ensure all documentation and sponsorship requirements are met.
