The SADC Media Awards 2026 are officially open for entries, inviting journalists across Southern Africa to showcase outstanding media work that promotes regional cooperation, integration and development. The awards recognise excellence in journalism and encourage media professionals to contribute to informed public discourse on Southern African Development Community (SADC) programmes and priorities.

The SADC Media Awards 2026 remain one of the most prestigious regional journalism awards in Southern Africa, offering both recognition and financial rewards to outstanding media practitioners.


About the SADC Media Awards 2026

The SADC Media Awards were established to motivate journalists to produce high-quality reporting that enhances public understanding of SADC’s role in regional integration and development. Through these awards, SADC seeks to strengthen collaboration between the media and regional institutions while promoting accurate, impactful and development-oriented journalism.

Journalists are encouraged to submit work that highlights SADC initiatives in areas such as economic development, infrastructure, water, agriculture, social development, culture and sports.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be nationals of a SADC Member State
  • Must be practising journalists
  • Must not be employed by the SADC Secretariat or contracted by SADC
  • Submitted work must have been published or broadcast between January and December 2025
  • Entries must have been published or aired by a registered media house or agency within a SADC Member State

Award Categories

Entries are accepted in the following four categories:

1. Print Journalism

  • Feature articles or news stories
  • Published in newspapers, magazines, newsletters or websites
  • Word count: 100 to 2,000 words

2. Radio Journalism

  • Radio programmes or reports
  • Duration: 1 to 30 minutes
  • Must include a full transcript

3. Television Journalism

  • Television programmes or reports
  • Duration: 1 to 45 minutes
  • Must include a full transcript

4. Photojournalism

  • A single photograph or a photo spread
  • Maximum of 20 published photographs
  • Must include captions

Prizes and Awards

Winners of the SADC Media Awards 2026 will receive the following prizes in each category:

  • First Prize: USD 2,500
  • Runner-Up: USD 1,000

In addition to the cash prize, award recipients gain regional recognition and increased professional visibility.

  • Application Deadline: 28 February 2026

Applicants are advised to submit their entries well before the deadline to avoid last-minute challenges.
