About the Fellowship

Fellowship Structure and Training
Intensive Immersion Course
The fellowship begins with a four‑week immersive course that introduces fellows to the core principles and practices of journalism. Training areas include:
- Journalism ethics and standards
- Reporting and interviewing techniques
- News writing and storytelling
- Audience engagement and distribution
This foundational period is designed to ensure all fellows, regardless of background, start with a strong and shared understanding of professional journalism.
Newsroom Experience
After the immersion phase, fellows join NOTUS, AJI’s partner newsroom, as paid reporters. While continuing coursework and seminars, fellows will:
- Report on U.S. politics, policy, and government
- Pitch, research, write, and publish original stories
- Receive regular feedback and mentorship from editors
- Participate in group critiques and professional development sessions
Following 18 months of structured training, fellows may remain with the programme for an additional six months, during which AJI supports career placement and next‑step opportunities.
Financial Support and Benefits
The fellowship is fully paid and offers competitive benefits, including:
- Annual salary of $60,000 USD, paid by NOTUS
- Health insurance and standard employment benefits
- $1,500 relocation assistance to support moving to the Washington, D.C. area
Eligibility Criteria
The Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI) Reporting Fellowship 2026–2028 is open to applicants from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate a strong interest in journalism and public affairs.

- Applicants from any academic or professional background are welcome
- Prior journalism experience is not required
